How fast do the pine beetles typically spread? We have a lease in SW Colbert County that is 2400 acres of mainly thinned pines. We were informed by our wildlife biologist 3 weeks ago that we had pine beetles, and roughly 100 acres would have to be cut asap. It has rained nearly every couple days since, and they haven’t been able to cut. Just wondering if we may be looking at a lot more cutting than originally anticipated. Thanks!

We've got them in Walker county. I have 2 neighbors across the road cutting now to salvage what they can. Had mine looked at and so far no sign. Just a matter of time.

They are really bad here in NW FL. Whether it is the beetles themselves or borers that move in after them, there aren't many places you can go and not hear them.

Beetles spread with the wind . They have no wings . If we have dry rest of summer only gonna worse . We cut many acres back around yr 2000 that had beetles . Most small spots was dozed into pile keep from spreading . Back then it was tops of ridge that had them because so steep up here .if get bad mills will refuse to take them here . An we only got one pulp mill in this area

They were very active last year in Monroe and surrounding counties. The generic term is pine decline where the stands just start looking weak and start dying, Most of the damage I saw was Ips beetles. They kill 3-4 trees in spots but there are a lot of spots. Trees slowly loose coloration and fade from the top down then die. Also have seen southern pine beetles too. Trees seem to die more quickly with pine beetles. Something is weakening the trees (blamed on the drought last year) which alow the beetles a foothold. . Everybody has their own opinion, I have heard nursery genetics, root fungus, soil compaction and root damage from logging operations, etc. I have seen natural (non planted) trees dying too. I too have seen several fresh patches recently. If we hit a dry spell it will get worse. I guess it's Gods way of telling us we have too many pine trees. Now there are adjoining pine plantations almost continually thru the county and any bug/fungus can easily spread on a large scale.

06-07 was our worst years, ips beetles killed some really nice pines we eventually sold for poles. Thankful we’ve finally cleared all of our bigger stands. Don’t have to worry about beetles or storms as much. I can’t say we’ve ever had southern pine beetles to any extent.

The USFS kept me in business from 02 to about 09 chasing bug spots in every National Forest in the Southeast. I bet some other folks here also got some of that money. They declared it to be FEMA disaster money at one point in those years. They were hand writing checks out of an old fashioned ledger book to pay all the independent contractors. I stood in lines with biologists and soil scientists and we collected checks like guys at the factory lining up at the pay-clerk window.

On a side note, pine lumber from beetle killed ponderosa pines brings a substantially higher price than lumber from unaffected trees. It is called blue pine in the stores. It is a different pine and I am guessing a different beetle too.

How is that profit looking with very low margins to start with and now... now you've got beetles or a Tornado, etc. You aren't making any money on your money.
Remember that owning land is a great investment.... in taking a loss on your taxes.
But you know Billy Bob who bought a piece and sold it and made a ton of money so stick with it.

That map doesn't show any infestations in Walker county and I know a couple people personally who have lost several acres to them the past few months.
