So i bought a 22lr pistol and rifle and the pistol is 10x quieter suppressed than the rifle is. Whats the science behind this. The pistol is almost silent, just the noise of the gun cycling and impact noise. The rifle, on the other hand, isnt much quieter with the suppressor on. That surprised me.

If you use subsonic rounds it will be quieter.

Longer barrel allows bullet to get to supersonic.

If you use subsonic rounds it will be quieter. In my experience, subsonic shells wont cycle. How do i overcome that? Are you shooting them out of a single shot?

I think that depends on the gun. I have a Ruger Mark something and most of the time they cycle it without issue but every now and again it doesn't quite cycle. I think that comes with using subsonic rounds on a semi-auto anything really. Don't really shoot them out of my .22 rifles so can't comment on that.
Added later: I use the CCI subsonic rounds and they do well with cycling. Not sure on other brands,

I will say I love shooting subsonic rounds with a suppressed .22 pistol. Hollywood quiet and just plain fun!

Cci standard velocity cycles fine in my mk3 22/45 and 10/22. Others that work good are the subsonic hp, segmented hp and some of the more expensive match ammo.
Guns do need to be cleaned and lubed a bit more to cycle subs, but a can typically helps.

So, what about a 22lr AR pistol, without a brace on it of course. I would never put one of those horrible braces on a AR pistol. Im looking for a way to put my thermal on a 22lr as well as the suppressor. Maybe shoot varmints running around out in the yard at night. How short would the barrel need to be to realize the maximum suppression potential?

Bolt action Ruger American and Sparrow suppressor. Very quiet with CCI subs (1050 fps claimed). But if if go to CCI Quiet loads (750 fps) it’s stupid quiet. I’d like to get a threaded pistol and another .22 cal suppressor.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Ruger 10/22 should cycle subsonics.
Most all 22lr ammo is subsonic in a pistol.

I know someone who has a semi 22lr rifle and has used subsonic rounds... not silent at all.... the action chambering another round is is not silent and most times will not cycle another live round...A fellow I know told me his bolt action rifle with subsonic rounds is perfectly silent...

My experience with bolt action vs semi suppressed is that the sound of the cycling is largely covered by the sound of the shot to a critter. In a bolt action the cycling becomes a whole sperate operation and it has to be done slow to be quiet. If you only need one shot who cares about bolt operation but if you have multiple targets or a miss you now have an alert animal(s) and you still need to cycle the action....good luck.
Also, things happen fast at night and with limited visability (verse daylight) I want speed.

Most all 22lr ammo is subsonic in a pistol. This is my understanding. From what I’ve read (I have no experience with suppressors) it takes a 16” barrel to get full powder burn on most 22lr rounds. In a rifle, you are going supersonic, thus the crack even with a suppressor installed. With the pistol, your rounds are subsonic, so no “crack” and this the more quiet application. Results will vary on ammo from what I have read.

I just chrono’d some ammo in my relatively new Taurus TX22 TORO Gen 2. First of all GO BUY THIS PISTOL and put a micro red dot . Never thought I’d say that about a dang Taurus. I’ve had centerfire auto Taurus pistols and never liked them and basically considered them junk even though they went bang ever time. The TX22 is just different. It eats any ammo you feed it, including subsonics, has phenomenal ergonomics and a good trigger. I’m no great shot with a pistol but this thing easily shoots 4” groups at 30 yards with a red dot. I’ve got around 500 rounds through it thus far. I have a buckmark and ruger 22/45 pistol, and the Taurus is much more fun to shoot than either.. It’s a great trainer for a centerfire pistol too. I only bought it b/c it was cheap and has a threaded barrel so I can run it supressed. (Still waiting on the can). I’d never even heard of this pistol until I started researching 22lr pistols with threaded barrels. CCI Velocitor 40gr 1187 fps Federal High Velocity 36gr HP 1128 fps CCI Standard Velocity 40gr 950 fps CCI Subsonic 40gr HP 926 fps It comes with a 16 & 22 round mag and through the end of July a rebate for 3 additional mags. https://www.kygunco.com/product/taurus-1-2tx22p141-tx22-gen2-22lr-blk-22rd-toroMy Ruger 10/22 also eats subsonics like a champ.

The pistol is almost silent, just the noise of the gun cycling and impact noise. The rifle, on the other hand, isnt much quieter with the suppressor on. That surprised me. It’s probably your ammo. It’s going supersonic in the longer rifle barrel and staying subsonic in the short pistol barrel. CCI standard velocity is super in my rifle and sub in my pistol. With the increase in back pressure, both of my .22 pistols reliably cycle true subsonic ammo. As long as the can is on it.

Changing ammo made a big difference. Cci standard is much quieter. Amazing that 200fps made that much difference

My friend has a suppressed Ruger 10/22, you only hear the action of the rifle when shooting subsonic ammo.
.22 subsonic ammo kill story:
I came home one day and me & my neighbor had a garden together, he was waiting at the garden when I arrived. Well his daughter had brought a mutt puppy home and it had grown into an 80lb mutt that was causing all sorts of trouble. Said mutt arrived at the garden when I did and my friend says "shoot that dog!" I had a Ruger 10/22 in my truck and it was loaded with CCI quiet ammo with a muzzle velocity of 710 fps. You could shoot these bullets at the clear blue sky and actually see the bullet in flight. So my friend had already yelled at the dog and the dog was running away with the dog about 80 yards away I aimed about a foot high and squeezed off a round. There was a thud that sounded like someone thumping a watermelon and the dog yelped. An hour later the dog was lying on my friend's front porch, DEAD. The bullet hit the paunch behind the last rib, angling forward toward the far shoulder.
