You just can't decide one day that your animal is a service or emotional support animal . There is forms and doctors visits you have to go through. Course it abused That just isn't accurate per the law. May not be legal, but it happens. My niece (flaming liberal, not my fault) downloaded a "certificate" for her "emotional support dog" (zero training, worthless POS dog) and the owners of the apartment she wanted to rent were required to accept it, and they couldn't ask for medical proof of an issue because of HIPAA regulations. I told her that was wrong, and her attitude was "but I got away with it" where i work at that wouldnt work . they have to prove they need it but not for what . form had to sign by a doctor and doctor could be called . but yeap they have to accept it . its called ,,,,reasonable accommodation .

From the ADA website for those with weak google fu.
Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability.
When it is not obvious what service an animal provides, only limited inquiries are allowed. Staff may ask two questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. Staff cannot ask about the person’s disability, require medical documentation, require a special identification card or training documentation for the dog, or ask that the dog demonstrate its ability to perform the work or task.
Allergies and fear of dogs are not valid reasons for denying access or refusing service to people using service animals. When a person who is allergic to dog dander and a person who uses a service animal must spend time in the same room or facility, for example, in a school classroom or at a homeless shelter, they both should be accommodated by assigning them, if possible, to different locations within the room or different rooms in the facility. A person with a disability cannot be asked to remove his service animal from the premises unless: (1) the dog is out of control and the handler does not take effective action to control it or (2) the dog is not housebroken. When there is a legitimate reason to ask that a service animal be removed, staff must offer the person with the disability the opportunity to obtain goods or services without the animal’s presence. Establishments that sell or prepare food must generally allow service animals in public areas even if state or local health codes prohibit animals on the premises. People with disabilities who use service animals cannot be isolated from other patrons, treated less favorably than other patrons, or charged fees that are not charged to other patrons without animals. In addition, if a business requires a deposit or fee to be paid by patrons with pets, it must waive the charge for service animals. If a business such as a hotel normally charges guests for damage that they cause, a customer with a disability may also be charged for damage caused by himself or his service animal. Staff are not required to provide care for or supervision of a service animal.

at the apartment i worked in clanton and all other for morrow reality . , to have a animal at no pets allowed complexes you had to prove you need the animal . you had to pay for any damage it caused . you had to have all shots up to date and stay up to date . you had to have a exterminator come twice a year . had to be on a leash . you had to be able to show proof to the site manager .
then ,,,,
they could not refuse the animal as long as it fell under the ,,, reasonable accommodation laws "support animals" . . no pet deposit could be required .
thats how it work with that company . they never got sued ,,, that i know of . yall can research ,, reasonable accommodation . i remember right youll end up at HUD web site

Me and the wife walked into the gym Saturday and was greeted by an ankle biter barking.... First thing out his mouth "She's a service animal" (Dog had no vest nothing showing its a SA)
It came up to My wife like 6 inches away.... We tried to walk around the dog.... but my wife smiled and kept walking. ( i knew my wife was fuming) He put her on a paper towel in another room.
Yesterday we went to the front desk to talk about a letter we got in the mail from them and we mentioned the dog and they told is it was not a service animal. I told them "If that dog bites me or my wife, that animal will need a service" The older lady at the front desk replied
"I know you right."
She said they are going to talk to the man about it. Curious to see the outcome...
I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

The certificate came with a Dr. signature and a notary stamp. Cost her $50, no office visit. Calls out the ADA on the certificate.

I take my little dachshund with me a few places that are dog friendly mostly pet stores or one fishing store I frequent but never to a restaurant or grocery store. But I wish someone would come up to me and start some shucks about it.
We will burn that bridge when we get there

I believe a true service dog would not be barking and jumping around. And not to be acknowledged or petted by anyone but their owner. Like already mentioned, pretty easy to get an animal and call it a support animal. One woman in Florence had a support monkey she’d take to the courthouse and all thruout downtown. She caused quiet a stir.
