At the place I hunt, the owner is in the process of putting a livestock fence around the entire perimeter, consisting of 4' pig wire and a barbwire top strand at 5'. As the property is too small to have a significant resident population of deer, how should I expect this to affect deer movement into/through the property? I know mature deer can jump some pretty big fences, Im more worried about does and fawns going around the property instead of moving through.

They will hop right over it and it will keep the hogs out. I don't know how old a fawn would have to be to jump it but I suppose if its following the doe it will jump it easy.

What is he trying to keep in with a fence that tall?

A 6 week old fawn can jump a 5' fence.

It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

Good question, Doekiller. I think it's more along the line of good fences making good neighbors for them.

We have a 5 strand barbwire fence separating our hay/cattle field and our neighbors standing hardwoods. Ive seen all age deer go under the bottom strand and of course jump over. They never seem to mind. One of the biggest bucks we have Ive seen go under a loose section of barbwire fence. Thank goodness he's never been tangled up.

If it was all barbwire then I wouldnt worry a bit, but they cant go under or through this fence, only over or around.

With a set of snips you can create a Heck of a crossing......I cut the top strand on a lease I have and repair it at the end of every season, they'd rather jump 3' than 4' any day ..... Probably wouldn't do it to a new fence though. The fence I cut is only for separating the properties and not keeping in/out livestock , and most importantly asked landowner before I went to snippin

That's very true. And it's good that you ask before doing that. The last guy that tried that here didn't have permission. I haven't seen him again.

I lease from one scary individual, never had a problem with him bc I keep the place clean, spray the fences, bushhog ect.... I would move to Mexico if I knew he was mad at me. I don't even pee on his property .....
