Have they disappeared?

The last two restaurants I’ve ordered them, they sent out those Argentine red shrimp without the head on them. Most recent time was at a seafood restaurant on the coast. There aught to be some sort of way to hold them accountable for false advertising.

You can if you can prove it. In AL I believe there’s a law requiring them to disclose the country of origin of seafood.

But no they haven’t disappeared. They’re just rare and very expensive.

Hmmm. I wonder if that is somehow connected the Red Lobster collapse? News said something about their supplier cutting them off then a weird deal and closed. It looked like an obvious fraud thing was going down.

I’ve had some really good royal reds so I’m lost on the gross thing.
I’ve only cooked one good batch of Argentine reds

You have to cook royal reds half the time that you do regular shrimp or they will be mushy.

Didn’t a study find that calamari was most likely pork sphincters instead of octopi? Talk about gross misrepresentation.

Go to Aquila seafood and ask for the seconds that are not restaurant quality. Cost around $3.50 pound.

Interesting thread. We get royal reds every year, but the ones my B-I-L picked up this year did not look the same as what I'm used to seeing and were headless. Not very good at all. Thinking they must have been Argentine red shrimp, which I'd never even heard of until reading this thread.

Not the calamari I get, unless pigs are growing tentacles out of their rear ends. Which is a whole other kind of wrong.

I've only ever ordered royal reds when at the beach, never had any that weren't delicious. We often just buy them from Lartigues, they'll boil them with potatoes and corn for just a few bucks extra.
