honestly they committed a crime and whatever time is handed to them needs to be served..
same way it was when Britney Griner was arrested in Russia for that incident involving a very small amount of weed or whatever it was..
everyone was like keep her ass she broke the law. same here they broke the law and need to pay the consequence.
its should be common sense to know the laws of a country you are going to visit.. ignorance of the law is no excuse This So if you accidentally had a couple of rounds of ammo in you bag you would be ok with spending 12 years in prison?

I went from Nashville to Denver and back for a turkey hunting trip. I use a badlands backpack as my carry on because it has lots of pockets and I can keep things organized. I had five .243 bullets in a hidden pocket on the interior that I forgot about. Nashville missed it, Denver didn’t. I’ve been to Turks and Caicos 3 times. Could’ve very easily been me

Could’ve very easily been me That's what I don't understand , how so many folks are missed with ammo , leaving the country , going through TSA in the US. Heck, I got busted for a very small Case pocket knife in my carry on going through Nashville a few years ago. TSA agent said I'd have to be a mighty bad man to bring down a plane with that , but you still ain't boarding the plane with it.

Considering the life altering prospect of spending 12 years in prison probably a best practice to either avoid such counties entirely (best option), or just make a best-practice to purchase a brand new bag each trip and not even risk something overlooked in an old bag.

Don’t toe a boat across the Mexican border with a flare gun onboard. Federallies confiscated a man’s several hundred thousand dollar boat, truck and threw him in jail till they milked the family clean. Moral of the story, follow all laws when traveling.

Better question I think needs to be answered is how did they get through TSA with loose ammo?
He's ^^^ right you know. Better question to be answered is did they even bring it there with them, or has someone dropped it in there to make a ruckus and get paid from their families and our government?

Let's say individual from a middle eastern country Flys to the US and TSA finds a few rounds in his suitcase, what then? Thoughts still the same? I agree people should make sure they have there shucks in order before going to another country. I think jail time is over the top though.

If there were the same outcry from gun/ammo owners over this guy as there was for that basketball, Anti-American, lesbian, he would be out of jail by now. It's going to take that type of fight for all this mess against gun owners to make the ATF back down. Sadly, it is just like on the forum, it is the guys fault, but that long in jail over a couple rounds?
I was in line for a TSA check when I remembered I had my pocket knife in my pocket. It's always there, the Lord just happened to remind me. I had to go check a bag real quick. Guess who's wife wasn't real happy? She reminds me now before we get out of the car anyplace that doesn't allow it.
Now before all you that have never forgotten anything chime in, it happens, it can happen to the best of us about forgetting something.
I'm with the guy that said we should hit them in their pocket book and put them on a no-travel list. Stop cruise lines that depart from the U.S. from going to that country.

Put them on a no go list and let them starve. They’ll get right quick. They're still responsible... With that said, the penalties are TOO STEEP whether they knew or not

I could care less about leaving the US but, I guarantee no weapons or ammo are unknown in any of my bags. It's not hard to account for all of your gear after a day/week of carrying.
I always double check in case my wife uses the bag on flts

Had a young man go through Peruvian customs with me a couple months ago and they found 2 rounds of 22 ammo. They let us go, but it could have gone much worse. Needless to say he got wore out when it all blew over.

In 2005 I took a cruise to St Maarten, and back, then to the Western Caribbean, and back.....with a handful of .22lr rounds in my bag that held the camcorder. Glad I'm not still in Jamaica....whew. I'll never go to that hell hole again.

My thoughts are how people could be that stupid having ammo in your luggage going into a foreign country. Grow up and serve the sentence and value it as a life lesson for being to lazy to check your luggage or simply to cheap not to purchase new luggage prior to a trip into another country. Also learn the rules of the country you are entering. Reminds me of military days and what one pot seed could get you if you couldn’t follow the rules

I spent 2 years working in the Caribbean Islands in the early 90’s
I’m never going back.
It’s all 3rd world and survival of the fittest.
Americans don’t understand the danger Things certainly have changed for the worse and you are correct. When I was running the islands in the military we came up with a phrase, “Jamaica has too many Jamaicans”, “Puerto Rico has too many Ricans”, and so on. We spent all kinds of money paying the locals off, anything from passport stamps, fake driving infractions, bar folk bumping into us and pseudo patting us down and finding a pistol in the waistline. They have no morals, its all about the money.
