Interesting thread! I've been working and just now getting around to reading it.
One thing I have never understood is the term "deer hunting" turkeys. For that matter, what is "deer hunting" deer? I've killed deer on dog drives, slipping through the woods, walking cutover, ground stands, tree stands, and probably some other ways. I don't know which one of those is real deer hunting. I really don't know how to apply any of those to turkey hunting. Would someone explain to me what it means to "deer hunt" a turkey?
If a turkey doesn't gobble, the only way I know to hunt him is by "blind calling." I would define that term as calling when you haven't heard a turkey, and that describes a majority of my hunts. I would much rather hunt a gobbling turkey, but if I go hunting and nothing is gobbling I resort to blind calling. I have killed a lot of turkeys that started gobbling after first hearing me. If I think there is a gobbler in an area, I will stay on a setup a long time. If I don't know if a turkey is around, I'll spend less time per setup and try to cover more ground.
But the one certainty if I am turkey hunting is that I am gonna be calling to a turkey, whether he is talking or not. I don't see much this has to do with deer hunting. I’d define it as sitting for hours on a decoy spread, usually on a green field, hoping something comes by. You know, kinda of like sitting on a deer stand for hours hoping something comes by. lol. Hunting turkeys as you describe I do not consider deer hunting them. Nothing wrong with the tactic if that’s the way you like to do it. I’m too ADD to sit like that unless I’m on a turkey. Thanks for the definition. I can't imagine anyone wanting to watch decoys for hours without even calling. Does anyone even do that? Most of the references I see to "deer hunting" turkeys comes from someone who says they refuse to do it. I wonder if anyone actually does this.

A person at my church does it (deer hunt turkeys) who happens to be my neighbor. He not much of a turkey hunter. He complained last year about never kilking a bird. He a younger guy - dont know a lot about it but thinks he does. I went to help him out some last year since he ask me to (he sees me cleaning turkeys some). I told him first few hunts - there way to much turkey noise going on at our set up - he had indicated he wanted me to help. He defended what he was doing. I helped him kill a bird we spotted on a windy day last year - he circled and got in front and shot bird. He has asked me several times this year and i hav declined.
He asked about decoys - i gave him a few nice ones this year. Later he told me - they do not work - he said he had em set up and later saw a gob on camera as set up but did not stay whioe he ass there 🤣🤣🤣. Also found out he sat in blind in a field from 8-2 with decoys and no luck!!said he watches mivies and looks up some. I just kept my mouth shut - no point showing how stupid that is - he will defend position!! Sad thing is - he has birds - tracks everywhere. He trys to force gobbles - loud - hard calling - its painful!!
Now thats deer hunting for turkeys!!
I agree w what pcp says above and i get real patient if i know turkeys in area. Aint had that feeling much this year! 🤣🤣 Sat down to 3-4 and called 3 diff ones in. 2 of the times they got away. Sat down to a few more last year and killed a few More - but it mostly slow. But think i finally just found a decent spot - will not kick in or start till next year - grateful. Been n awful spots for a good while and i miss some of my old wmas i use to frequemtly kill on

4 years in and I've yet to hear drumming. I've seen several Toms now but have yet to hear one drum. Wondering if I can hear that frequency.
I'm convinced I can't....I've had gobblers strutting close several times but I've never heard it. I've also had people send me videos of turkeys claiming that you could clearly hear them drumming.....but for me, *nothing* I can hear the spit (in the videos) but nothing else They have to be VERY close and VERY loud for me to hear. Gobbling is a different story, at 64 YO I can hear a gobble far as anyone . Sure wish I could hear it .

And with all that said - i can get on the wrong turkey that can kick my butt all year - that aint happened in a while - prob due to lack of turkeys. Those are the ones i hate and lov the most - feel great when u kill! The more tricks u got in the bag (things u got to break them down from strutt to come in) the more u will kill!!
For silent gobs - first and foremost - more patience! If u dont hav large fields - pastures or open areas (areas to watch from a distance) silent gobs can b very tuff!! I almost always dont hav lot of large open areas so hav no clue where silent gob is
Turkey i killed second day this year - i had prob sat silent for at least 25 min and they just appeared. Another larger bird came in after shot from another direction after the shot. One had answered my crow when i got there and never gobble again - never answered 3 hard cuts from diff locations nor soft stuff. I just decided to shut up - had the advantage of knowing they were there! If they No gobble at crow - i would hav been long gone!!

The one I killed Wednesday came in 55 minutes after blind calling. I knew he was in the area, because he was gobbling on the limb. He went dead silent after his feet hit the ground, but 55 minutes of patience and he was dead. I’ve killed quite a few that way, after most would’ve moved on. How often in that 55 min did you blind call? Or did you blind call the first time and just wait on him? One call. That’s all. I soft clucked and did a 4 note yelp when I sat down. Then I waited. I'll purr ever now and then too

Killed their limit every year, both of them. They used a cart to transport all their gear. Had a heck of a spread. I talked to a guy last year an he and his buddy just so on Greenfields with very limited calling and no decoys. They killed their limits when others did not. Then there is those guys that race to a field when their cell cam sends a pic. I now of one deal where a guy left work and went to kill his gobbler. Things have certainly changed since I started

Can’t imagine how exciting that would be in the woods.
