If you can access the ceiling from the attic I would put a 4x4 across the tops of the the joists and and put a rod up though the ceiling and through the 4x4 and use washer and nut to secure. I have done this with a porch swing and it is rock solid. This ^^^^ is the way to do it. Yep. Simple and strong, 1/2" all-thread should do it. I'd double nut it too.
