Hanging harbor freight electric hoist in the garage ceiling to lift the convertible hardtop using a unistrut trolley. The ceiling joists are 2x14 i-joists so I'm going to have to hang blocking between them to support.
The whole rig (hoist with hardtop) will be about 100 pounds. I'm pretty sure 2x lumber will support the weight with 2 attachment points, but does 2x give enough meat to drive lag bolts into? Should I consider 4x to make sure there's enough material for a lag bolt to grab into? I have also seen a guy use 4x4 and drill all the way through it to bolt through with a washer or plate on top, which may be overkill for my load.

not sure for your application. I used three I-beams 10-11 inch...2 uprights and 1 across. Trolly hanging off the one horizontal beam. I use it to lift 1000lb bag of deer feed out of my truck bed. Uprights bolted to concrete floor. Works like a charm, I can unload truck in 10 minutes by myself. Harbor Freight 2 ton hoist and HF trollies.

how much are you lifting????
The hardtop is about 75 pounds, the hoist itself is maybe 25 so I'll have 100 pounds total supported from 2 attachment points. Key is I need to mount it to the ceiling to lift a removable hardtop off of the convertible .

Personally I would have at least 4 attachment points to the joists and make a "H" shaped mount out of 2x4's with all 4 ends of the "H" lag bolted to the joists. Can you simply bolt through the flanges of the joists? How much Flange width do the joists have? Anecdotal engineering... I've personally seen porch swings mounted to ceiling joists with 1/4" lag screw eye bolts and those things routinely hold 2 adults, plus the dynamic loading of the swing going back and forth. Two mother in laws on that thing and you'd be going over 600 pounds.

If you can access the ceiling from the attic I would put a 4x4 across the tops of the the joists and and put a rod up though the ceiling and through the 4x4 and use washer and nut to secure. I have done this with a porch swing and it is rock solid.

I plan to reinforce both sides of the web with 3/4 osb or plywood and hang dimensional blocking between the joists with top-flange mounted joist hangers to lag my trolly track into. The only thing going on it is about a 25# electric winch that will lift the 75# hardtop off of my convertible to keep it elevated instead of taking up floor space in the garage.

I have two in my shop. One small one (400 lb) mounted in unistrut the whole length of the shop (40’ ft). I only lift stuff that is 100-150 pounds max these brackets are bolted to each truss. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0B9LZCLK2/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_2?smid=&psc=1. The trolley will hit the head of the bolts unless you use trex framing screws with wide heads. I Mostly move stuff from assembly tables to trailer. I have another winch mounted to the roof in the attic to lift things from the shop to the attic. This spans four trusses and quarter inch steel brackets welded. I have lifted 60 gallon air compressor, blast cabinet, christmas stuff, etc into attic. For lathes, presses, Bridgeport, etc I use my gantry crane. i own heavy crap

I deal with a lot of material hoists at work and design the rigging to go with them, depending on the application. OSHA calls for a 2:1 safety factor when dealing with material hoists. I know OSHA isn’t involved here but it’s still a good guideline to go by. So…if your lifting 100 lbs max, make sure your rigging is rated for 200 lbs minimum

I think I've figured out that I'll use 3 2x6 blocking between the i-joists to give my trolley rail 3 attachment points with 5/16 lag bolts. Should be plenty for this application.
