This is super cool. Chip technology is so tiny it's a wonder how we even manufacture it and it's understandable why the US wants to bring as much of the production as we can back home. So much of our lives depend on it now, not to mention the National Defense implication.

It's like stuff keeps getting smaller and smaller and smaller and then all of the sudden it just becomes magic.

Its always amazed me that there are not several chip plants here. Heck, the most important metal on Earth for chips and cell phones comes from right here in Alabama.

Mrs. Irish and I watched it again yesterday afternoon, it just amazes me how they even build that stuff. How do you manufacture stuff like that?

What people don't see, are the years and years of learning, and experiment after experiment that failed.

Here is most of science.

Edison's light bulb was very simple, but his lab tested ~3,000 different filaments. He did NOT invent the light bulb. He bought that patent. He made a filament that lasted long enough to make the light bulb functional.

1990, Auburn University, I was blessed to be able to have a couple things that helped me through school.

1. 486DX40 desktop. Had to make a boot disk to get enough RAM to run some of the renegade (locally procured wink software from the AG Econ Lab.
2. HP 28S. That damn mini computer or calculator was some count. Those of us that had them were at an unfair advantage but the profs could not do anything about it.

They're currently working on building a MASSIVE production plant in Arizona, between Phoenix and Tucson.....and when I say massive, I mean unbelievably huge to the point where it seems like it's an illusion.

We are too expensive. On a side note. We just bought some SMT line (surface mount equipment) that can place parts onto circuit cards that are smaller than a fleck of pepper at tens of thousands per hour.

Its going to be about as big as the Tesla Giga-factory on the south end of Austin. You can find it with Google Satellite imagery almost as fast as you can type its name in the search box because it says TESLA on the roof of it. Each letter is bigger than a football field..

The technology that really gets protected is how to manufacture and the materials needed to manufacture the hardware that is needed to manufacture the chips.

Back in the early 2000's I invested in a Silicon Valley chip manufacturer. Global suppliers overran the market and I lost nearly all my investment. Worst stock purchase I ever made.

China with their hold on neodymium could be issue. We saw during Covid, the global JIT supply chain is extremely fragile.
