R_H_Clark Leupold Pro Staff R Joined: May 2012 Posts: 8,670 NW Alabama	I've researched the issue of a first caliber a lot.A 30-30 will work well but some others are a bit more versatile.The 243 with todays bullets is a fine caliber if recoil is an issue.I'm told the 308 can be loaded to 30-30 levels so it would be very versatile. I wouldn't have any problem starting a young hunter on a 30-30 but would only do so if it fit well and recoil wasn't too much. I needed even less recoil than a 243 and went with a 223 for my daughters first rifle.With the right bullet,I have no concerns about it not being large enough.
