Looking to do my own mineral sites from here out and just wanted to see what the opinions here had to say on the matter. TIA If I may, why are you wanting to do a mineral site ? To attract deer to that area so you can possibly kill them or do you believe it will make a difference in the horns ? I'm just curious. It’s a cheap and easy place to inventory the deer all antler growing season. Replenish the lick once annually and you have a place to get a pic of all the bucks in the area without having to continually put bait out. Plus the minerals can’t hurt. Don’t be discouraged if they don’t tear up a particular mineral lick location. It’s most likely the soil type not the mineral mix. I’ve got places where they won’t touch a lick but 300 yards away they’ve literally eaten more than a ton of soil over the past 5 years. Seems like the more clay the better that like it. Loamy soil, not so much. I’ve got established licks with holes so deep they hold over a foot of water and the deer will stick their heads under the water to eat the mineral/dirt. This is exactly my line of thinking. Anything that potentially helps the herd health and attracts deer, I’m in on. Appreciate all the insight fellas. Def going to be trying some of these instead of all the money on commercial licks

Minerals assist with antler growth and can bring more bucks in and hopefully can keep them around, harvest them, or just get good pics

What about hogs? I put between food and water. I know on trophy rocks folks have drilled a hole and ran a cable through and around a tree or had one hang to deter hogs. Not sure how one would prevent access to a mix

I’ve heard it helps deer break down the green vegetation, can help antlers, fetus growth, does health during pregnancy, aid in Lactation and passing on nutrition. I’ve only heard good things that may or may not be true as I’ve never looked at studies. It’s cheap easy, and could be beneficial. Never have read anything that would be negative

What about hogs? When we hunted the river swamp, we would put salt over an old cypress stump. They would eat the stump. Now we have just established areas off of some big food plots. I do not ever recall seeing a deer at a mineral site during the season.

Just pour plenty of trace mineral salt on top of soil you think would hold water (flat area of clay, or whatever works on the site you hunt). Like a couple hundred pounds. Keep doing it several times the first year. As the years go by, just freshen it up. You will eventually get a gigantic pit that they will visit regularly. Be aware it might affect nearby trees.
Mount a camera up and the deer will come by and visit on a regular basis.

I have had good luck with the Country Road All Stock 4% Phosphorus Block, 33 lb. Block from Rural King. I usually throw down some red trace mineral around it if available. I planned to mix the dicalcium phosphate, but I cannot seem to find any local to the Huntsville area.

Just put out mineral at all my properties over last 2 weekends. Probably refresh late april or early may then again august
The auburn mineral going to hav dical amd phosphate along with other things

What about hogs? I look for clay, but I also like to find a stump that is rotting out and pour it on it. I have one on a field prior to Westervelt saying we couldn't put mineral out, that every yote and bobcat would come by and pee on it too. Deer just wore it out. It was in a field down in a creek bottom in the middle of a pine thicket. I like to put them onm the edge of a green field. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Get them to take in minerals, and eat a little out of my limed and fertilized high protein plot.
