I have a trip coming up and own both calibers. Debating which caliber to take. Shots should be under 200 yards. Probably more like 150. Will be day and night.

308 is overkill but between the 2 thats what i would take
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Tough call. Guessing the .308 is a bolt action? If you think there would be opportunities for multiple kills at one time the autoloader would be a big advantage. However, it is slower and will require more lead on running shots. If that does not matter I would go with the .308.

Varies wildly IMO. .308 is plenty I don't think the 458 is necessary at all and expensive unless you are shooting sub-sonic then there is no comparison the .458 is the clear winner.
90% of the hogs I kill are with .223 or 7.62x39.

Tough call. Guessing the .308 is a bolt action? Both bolt action and AR10 Wide open fields ? High hog count in smaller fields ? Lot's of variables. Mostly will be picking off pigs on feeders. Terrain is woods. Varies wildly IMO. .308 is plenty I don't think the 458 is necessary at all and expensive unless you are shooting sub-sonic then there is no comparison the .458 is the clear winner.

I hunted pigs 3-4 times a week back in Texas. I used a ton of different calibers throughout those years but always enjoyed the big bore rounds like 45-70, 444 and 45 Colt. It was always satisfying to here that thump when those slow moving bullets connected. If the shots are 200 yards or less and in the woods, I'd choose the 458 all day long. If it were over open fields then the 308 would be it.

I can do 308 suppressed. not to derail the discussion but the best sub-sonic option is 450 Bushmaster because you can shoot all the various pistol bullets available... which actually expand at sub-sonic velocity. Works better than shooting a cast bullet or some kind of specialty .308 subsonic bullet. Basically you a loading this to a 45 Long Colt. All this is effectively bow hunting with a gun if you are truly sub-sonic. Bullet weight and expansion are the only real variables the velocity across every option is the same. If that makes sense.

Thanks for that tip Goat. I will research it. I would really like a subsonic round to take deer at 100 yards.

After going suppressed, I have no desire to shoot anything else.
