Ive been thinking about getting one for my son. He would like to start shooting longer range and the 308 is about the cheapest ammo for that. Not that he cant shoot the 270 or 243 that distamce, but those guns are set up for the woods. A long range lighter recoil 308 sounds about right. ((lighter than the 300 win mag)

only 308 I ever wanted is a M1A1 or a M-14. And I stand corrected...I did shoot a 308/M1A1 in competition years ago...and did take first place at a FBI Urban Sniper school with it. I was thinking deer guns...it just never fluffed my skirt as a deer cartridge. Except in a Rem 760 Carbine for clearcut walking.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I bought a .308 stainless fluted barrell a few yrs ago for my Thompson center Encore w/thumbhole camo stock...Santa brought me a new Leopold VX3HD 3x10x50 Fire dot scope to put on it this past christmas...I mounted the scope and had it bore sighted but havent shot the rifle yet....Does anyone have any recommendations for a factory bullet to use for it? I really like the rifle and how it feels shouldered. and was thinking about using it next yr. but have no clue what to run thru it...Does anyone else have this setup, and know what kind of shells perform best?....TIA...

Barnes 130 or 168 ttsx. But shoot several brands the rifle will tell you what it likes

There was a long discussion on the subject in the Serious forum last year about this time. I have used a 308 as my primary deer rifle all my life, and long ago quit experimenting with it. With factory loads, a deer will never know the difference in a 308 or 30-06. It's easy to develop 308 hand loads that as fast as 30-06 factory loads when dealing with 150g bullets. That's the size where they are close to equal; the advantage goes to 30-06 in heavier bullets, but we have no moose in AL so that never mattered to me.
But by far, the biggest advantage it has over a 30-06 is the short action. I would never choose a long action for AL deer hunting.

one day we were sitting around my living room (which has several shoulder & euro/skull mounts) & talking about guns/ammo - my dad was going on & on about his 30-06, it’s knock-down power, etc. ... after his sermon, i said, “well a 308 must really suck in comparison to your 30-06 - it’s killed all these deer on my walls” i’ve been real happy w/my Rem 700 308

I've killed many deer with a .308. I currently hunt with a 30-06.
I really can't tell a difference at the distances I shoot.
They both launch a 168gr bullet fast enough to efficiently get the job done.
I've only owned 1 308 I regeret selling...Crocker currently has it - or did last time I asked .lol
I've thought about gettinng another Ruger American in .308 but by the time I get rid of the cheap stock and the crappy trigger, I could buy a Bergara.
I don't like the new Gen II American rifles either.
All Ruger did was added a few features for cool points(fluted barrel and brake...I hate brakes).
The triggers still suck.
Oh I think it has a large bolt knob ... I guess that's something
I'm leaning hard toward a Bergara Ridge in .308

.308 is great. Doesn’t kick like a 30.06 but has similar performance and stopping power. Killed a bunch of deer with a .308

Gundoc, I picked up a Ridge in 22-250 Friday week ago. Blown away with how nice it is. The trigger was fantastic out of the box. Had planned on a Timney but it’s not needed. Only put about 20 rounds through it but it’s a fine rifle. I’m a Bergara fanboy now.

More 308s in my safe than any other cartridge. I didn’t think they were cool when I was young….they not flat shooting but they flat out deadly and accurate
