Astra blades, here. Was using my grandfather’s old safety razor, but the folding wings mechanism finally froze up and got a new Muhle without all of the hoopla of the twist handle opening head…layer the blade between the head and baseplate, screw it on and go. It seemed like I was always adjusting the blade for even coverage on each side with the twist handle razor.
If you haven’t used one in a while, don’t go with an aggressive head…or if you do, make sure you get a styptic pencil. You’ll need it until you get a feel for the angle needed to keep from nicking yourself. Once you get a better feel for the safety razor and comfortable enough to go with an aggressive head, you’ll get a closer shave with less strokes (less irritation).
If you’re hamfisted, look at ones with fatter, longer handles. Ones that are too light or that have thin and/or short handles are harder to control with big hands. The weight of the razor should do the work for a close shave, not you bearing down on it.
