I know there’s been several threads on this sort of thing, but I’m reaching out for advice. I’ve been in Law Enforcement for 8 years, 3 of which have been in investigations. I was hunting guide, did some sales and small mechanic work before law enforcement. I am mentally and emotionally burn out with law enforcement and due to some circumstances I have pondered a career change. I have supported my lovely wife and three boys through this time, allowing her time to finish her masters and bachelors degrees. I do not have any degrees, but am not against gaining them. More than likely I would have to work, take care of family, and do online classes or some sort of night school. Not against any trades. I enjoy working with my hands, and tend to excel with whatever I’m tasked with. I have worked on average 45-65 hour weeks so I’m not scared to work. I’m asking for direction, or a way I could continue to support my family in a way that would benefit them and possibly make a change. Any advice you guys have on something I should look into, or that’s high in demand, lay it one me. I’m 33 years young.

I quit my job one year ago and went FT owning a lawn care business. I only work Monday through Friday, home every evening, hunt when I want in the Winter, and genuinely enjoy what I do. I was a little concerned with how much revenue I'd generate my first year, but I've far exceeded my expectations financially.

Go try and get a position in sales. Sunsouth, Capital Tractor, any of the Heavy equipment dealers in Montgomery area. They are always looking for young, energetic, responsible employees. It doesn’t have to be sales, they can train you in Service parts, or in the service dept as well. I know some of those dealerships have had a high turnover rate and always looking to rehire. You can make pretty good money with commission and sales bonuses. The precision Ag sector is also a promising up and coming career at one of these dealerships. They train you in guidance systems and all the new precision sprayers, planters, etc. Job security and you would be trained while on the job, on their dime. Can be a low stress career compared to what you are used to. Just an idea that you may want to pursue.

Go in business for yourself. Find a service or something you can provide, that is needed, and do it better than anyone else. If you work hard, are honest with people and show up when you say you will, then you’ll have plenty of work.

I recommend to everyone that asks, if you’re a people person, go get a degree in occupational health and safety. You used to be able to get in the door by knowing someone and learning on the job, but not anymore. There are jobs out the ears and it’s a field that’s only going to increase in demand. I'm retired and the wife works full time....We got a little side gig going on, on Only fans right now, just for a few extra bucks....

If you are burned out now, and I've been there, my advice is to get out now, but I'll tell you that you'll never find another job that gives you the satisfaction of the one you're in.

Somehow the combination of Only Fans and Deer Nutz....concerns me. Some things you can't unthink.

Sounds like you need to ride it out until your wife can find employment. But then you may run into daycare costs, which are high as a kite. I do like the ideas from Rarebreed, those look like good options. However, the real money is in self-employment.

I understand where you are coming from. I have been in for 9 years and on multiple occasions I have debated on getting out. In August I started a laser engraving business to do on the side and would hope to one day have enough revenue that I can get out of law enforcement.

I need 6.5yrs and I can draw State Retirement at age 53. I dont know what I will do after that but it wont be this. I will have to find a 2nd career to make ends meet.

Get something with a retirement. State, county, federal job . Be sure your building credits toward SS.

I respectfully disagree, I enjoyed the job, hated the politics but I enjoy what I’ve been doing since I left it and believe it or not standing on the side of the interstate at night running a wrecker is more adrenaline charged than a crack house gunfight. I will admit not spending much time at the shop or in a wrecker the last couple months, I’ve really gotta keep myself busy and seeing results to be satisfied though.
The only time I’ve ever missed policing is when I see a kid endangered or being mistreated.

I’ve got a few guys that have gone from starting out with little experience at $40k ish to $125-200k in 2-3 years each depending on how driven they were. Very few degrees will do that and definitely not in the same timeframe

If you are a hard worker and are good with your hands there are a lot of good paying jobs out there for you. Those traits are almost non-existent now. Employers will line up to hire you if they see it.
