What Chevy do I need to stay away from? I’ve been driving a dodge since 05. The transmission died yesterday. Normally I would fix it but the engine burns a quart of oil every 2 weeks. I like the z71s but have never owned one.

I can personally attest for transmissions being crap in 17-18,but if you buy a used one then it probably already has a new one in it so you're probably good. I think the problem was addressed when GM went to the 10 sp.

I’ve had a 21 z71 for a few years and no problems. Just a daily ish driver. It’s a plain work truck though. My fords have little issues but nothing major. They have a better seat in them than the z71. A250 &350 work trucks. All are fuel hogs. Had a tundra work truck with a 6 cylinder and it was a beast. Probably the best overall half ton truck I’ve had. No issues at all. It sits on the yard mostly these days but it’ll crank and go when I need it.

the Chevy motors are having a lot of lifter issues. If you get a Chevy, keep it under warranty on the motor.

21 silverado here. 40k miles. Been in the shop 2 times, both times under 35k for injectors. Right bank around 18k left bank around 32k. Other than that its been a good truck, ill be moving to a diesel soon. I wouldnt keep a 1500 past the powertrain warranty.

Stay away from the 8 speed transmission. Those are the ones that had major issues.

Chevydude hit on something that seems to be the norm now. The more speeds a auto transmission has , the more problems it has . If it's mechanical , it can fail, the more complex , the more likely to fail. Simple is better, the old two and three speed GM autos worked great in what they were designed for and high HP hot rods too.

Stay away from the 8 speed transmission. Those are the ones that had major issues. Agree, I wish I would have bought the 6.2 instead of the 5.3 in 2018. The 6.2 had the 10 speed 5.3 the 8. I just upgraded my warranty to 100,000 so should be good. So far no issues but it does shift hard ever so often when I down shift from 2 to 1st... but really depends on the incline. Had the truck 6 years and only issue was A/C went out and it was a $1000 repair. Been a great truck.

[this wouldn't be Aldeer if someone didn't offer unsolicited advice or answer a question you didn't ask, so.....]
buy an older Tundra (if you need a pickup), Sequoia or Lexus with the 4.7 and stop worrying about engine issues. There's a reason they're nicknamed the "half million mile engine". You find one that's been properly maintained and cared for, they're about as bulletproof an engine as you will find.

I've owned two and they are pretty much bullet proof but 10-12 mpg is the real avg MPG depending on the vehicle it's in and less if pulling anything behind it.

Got a mailer yesterday stating 2k manufacturer rebate for F150. Great timing for me as I’m about to get one. Owned a Tundra for a year now and just don’t like the Tundra like I did the F150. Truck will probably run for 300k miles but life is too short to drive something you don’t like.

Another note, most of the problems around the 8-speed stem from driveability/shifting concerns. There’s been few issues with actual catastrophic failures of them from what I’ve read but the two most common issues are a shudder that is fixed by replacing the fluid with a newly designed fluid and a hard shift or downshift from 1-2 or 2-1. So, you may find one that doesn’t seem to shift well but more than likely it will keep going. Just make sure you test drive whatever truck you’re looking at as transmissions in every vehicle have issues occasionally and require fixing/replacing.

Why take the gamble with something so expensive? Just get a Toyota.

Bought a 23 z71 3.0 diesel August last year and that was the biggest POS I've ever purchased have 5k miles on it and have a laundry list of things that have been done to it to "fix it" while being in the shop for nearly two plus months....had to get the BBB and lawyer involved ...I'll never buy another GM product just because of how GM service/tech/ customer support has handled this
