I use a 40’ rappel line with my saddle and one stick. There have been a bunch of times while rifle hunting where I got to a height that I could see everything I wanted to and looked down to see then end of my rappel line was 5-10’ up off the ground.

Daddy built some 60+ years ago..hed run a climbin stand 40ft in a heartbeat…idk why he did that…i climbed 25-30ft purty regular in my ol mans an i still hang my loc on an average height of 18-25ft..but i mostly hang 15-20ft..i kilt my first rcurve deer 6ft off the ground in 2020..i had good cover and side hilled him..ive kilt a bunch 10-12ft high..depends on cover…ive done it in trees that are barely 8in in diameter too.

We put up several loc on stands in my teens that were 40-50’ up. I had a pine on the forest in perry cnty I could get 60’ plus in with my climber. I had a spike under me and he looked like a squirrel from that height. Don’t know why I put ladder.

I'm not a candidate for these type stands. Once I get to 18'-22' or so my brain tells my body to stop. Sometimes I push past it if I really want to hunt at a certain height pretty bad. I remember one morning I climbed in a spot in the dark so I couldn't tell how high I was. It was a nice climb where I felt confident with how my summit was biting the tree and the angle of the bottom. When it got light I figured out I was about 30-35' up. I got settled just sitting there, but the climb down was zero fun.

I’ve got a couple of bluff edges that I’ll sit on at my farm. They are probably 50’-100’ drop in some places. It’s where I’ll go if I want an easy hunt. Park in a flat field and walk over to them. Easy in-Easy Out and Up high and undetected. I should probably hunt them more. I’d kill more deer.

I got up p about 40 on my climber on the edge of a deep bluff and it looked even higher cause I was looking down the bluff. Wind got up and scared the hell out of me I got the only anxiety attack I have ever had. This was before cell phones and I was in the middle of nowhere by myself. Kept looking down and panicked the whole time as the wind was whipping me around. Finally got it together and came down. Never again.

Cotton picking spindles bring back memories.. There was a club I was in years ago in Macon County that loved those damned cotton spindles for their lock-ons or platforms build in the tree.. I have always hated those things - I never once felt safe climbing on them. I have a Tree Lounge (had it for years) - I guess if the tree was skinned high enough, there wasn't a height that I wouldn't climb in it. But, I think the highest I've ever climbed was probably 30', that was the length of my pull rope and once it started lifting the gun on a climb - I stopped.

I used to climb 20ft+ in the old homemade climber back in the day...but after a ladder stand accident in 93'...I usually hunt the ground and do good...no longer have a climber and occasionally climb a 12-14ft metal ladder stand... most of it is a mental thing I know...but

We've got one at a club in Coosa co called "Too Tall" and there have been several deer shot over from that stand...
All the river wants is its fair advantage.

Generally speaking, how high can a regenerating pine thicket get before you can no longer see down into it well enough to shoot from a very elevated position 30-40 foot up on a ridge overlooking (or opposite) said pines?

I was watching one of Michael Waddel’s youtube videos about this old stand his daddy built back in the 80’s and how tall it was……They went and measured it and it turned out to be right at 38 ft……It reminded me of the climber that was on a pine tree at our old club in Camp Hill back when I was about 16-17 years old. It was one of those first climbers people really started using….I forget the names of them that were made out of square aluminum. Anyways, the other guys that my dad and uncles were in the club with had this climber on a pine tree that had been limbed up to 50 ft overlooking a young clear cut…..It was a measured 50 ft too so there was no doubt. Well, I decided one day I was gonna hunt there and go all the way up to that limb where the other guys were hunting…… It was all good until probably the 35 ft mark when the little up/down ratchet process you do when climbing turned into baby steps of about a foot at a time…..Then at about 40 ft it turned into sitting there thinking about it awhile and looking around deciding how bad I really wanted to go up to that limb……Finally at probably 43 ft or so the wind started blowing some and that’s when I said screeeeeeew this and went back down about 10 ft for my afternoon sit. I remember looking up at the limb thinking….its only another 6 of 7 feet but that swaying around boogered me up. Warren and Sweat climber?

I regularly climb to 30 ft overlooking clear cuts. Anything over that, I don’t find any advantage.

When it was a teen, there was a stand built into a fork of a large hickory overlooking a clear cut called the penthouse. Probably about 30' up IIRC.
In my younger days I would regularly climb pines to 50-60' high with an original Summit climber, but that was many years ago.

I work at, and deal with heights, every single day and have for over 20 years. I’m not doubting anything y’all are saying but one thing I’ve learned through my career, is MOST folks can’t estimate heights for anything. What most folks will swear is 30’ tall is usually about 15’. Unless one has a measured length of pull rope, as mentioned above, that confirms the height they are climbing, they usually aren’t climbing nearly as high as they are guessing.

I've climbed some pines I could just barely get an ol man climber on up till the limbs started with no safety harness a bunch of times. I just don't see the need in it. But I'm not much of a cut over hunter. Now adays I don't want to kill one bad enough to climb 40-50 foot

Had a friend I started hunting with that had the highest stands I ever saw. I'd say 40-50 ft . He was tall and long legged and I couldn't start to climb most of them because I'm short . The one or two I could climb I stayed half scared to climb . We would be driving down the road and he would say , I've got a stand on a big oak tree on that ridge . You know who's land that is and he would say, nah , I've never seen anybody hunting there .

my brother sent me to one of his high lock-on’s years ago - he ran out of steps about 30’ up so you had to use tree limbs the rest of the way to get in it ... i let him have that 💩🤣
