I used to love them. We used to wade in the "Sound" at Ft. Walton with a knife in hand. They are off my list now. It's just not worth the risk for me personally to eat them raw.
I thought some on here might be interested by this story.

I love them raw but only eat them in periods of dry weather. Interesting article.

I believe i saw this or something similar to this on an episode of Bizzare foods with Andrew Zimmern. I believe the episode i saw was someone bought a place that had big concrete tanks and he started raising oysters in them.

Years ago oysters were cheap and not near as dangerous. I used to eat dozens and dozens in one sitting. I recall one trip all we ate wa oysters for the long rainy weekend at gulf shores.

I love oysters, we cooked a half gallon Christmas day. I still eat a few raw, not like I used to. Some of the best oysters I ever ate came of the pilings under the Bob Sikes Bridge years ago when I was still diving.

I eat them all the time, anytime of year. I was raised on them and shrimp. I’ve never had an issue not has anyone in our family or anyone that I personally know. I will say this, most oysters on the half shell served in a restaurant are flash frozen at harvest. So if you only eat them at certain times of the year, you really have no idea when they were harvested.

My friend at Dauphin Island won’t touch one since he got sick eating one many years ago. His wife’s son harvests oysters out of bayou la batre

Last year we had bad oysters here in Florida that came from Galveston Bay. The health department put a recall on them. The 3 of us that ate them got sick and that was the sickest I had been in a long time. Took me a while to start eating them again. They have gotten so expensive that we now buy them from the grower for half the price. Their seedlings come from the Auburn University aquaculture program.

Not to derail but not just with oysters, a lot of food makes people sick now days. I'm in my 50's and just don't really remember people getting sick all the time from eating whatever. What has changed? All the preservatives?

What has changed are the number of people handling the food and the number of different environments the food goes through before the food gets to your mouth. It used to be one maybe two guys getting oysters out of the water and tossing them in a sack, then maybe a waitress pre-shucking them for you all in the same 24 hour period. Now, who knows how many different hands, machines, trucks, temperature changes, etc... they go through before you them. All it takes is one germ along the way to get you sick.

Think about that big pallet of frozen pizzas at Walmart sitting in the aisle waiting to be shelved. That pallet may wait a real long time before it goes back to safe temperature, and how many times between the factory and Walmart did that happen?

I don't eat them raw, but will eat the heck out of some that are chargrilled!

There used to be a bar in Panama City Beach that had some great oysters and cold beer that we could walk to from the beach...No telling how many trays of them jokers I ate back then...

Yup. The good old days of .99 cents a dozen and dollar beer. They were 1.99 a dozen for years. Last time I ate 11 dozen my tab was $140 and change just for oysters.

LOVE them cooked however you want to. BUT RAW.....Hale to th' Naw-Naw!!

Louisiana the Restaurant used to have oyster tasting from around the county and some from around the world. A lot fun tasting the differences on each coast and so forth. Those coldwater briny oysters from the west coast were best in my opinion. Apalachicola 🦪 are very good too.

I won't eat gulf oysters raw, but Blue Points or Northern Coldwater oysters I will eat them raw.
