Muzz and me tracked one today on some public land. It was bow only so for the first time I didn't bring a gun just my knife. We waited 6hrs to start tracking. Muzz got on the deer and in no time we had him bayed. He broke a few times and ended up 50 yards from the truck on the last one. I walk up and the deer just squared off with me and came charging. He messed up because I already had my knife out. Deer ended up being grazed across his belly, nuts cut off and the arrow went through one back leg without hitting bone. Great folks to help out and meet. Glad his father got to go with us and be apart of it.

Tracked a deer out towards Fort Payne yesterday. Muzz and Cotton caught up to him quick. He broke away once and ran 200 yards. He was done after that.

Went out towards Alexandria after that track and loaded up a nice buck. He was shot head on and the hunter broke a front leg and hit a back leg. The deer ran 3/4 of a mile or so crossing a couple roads and big fields. Took us awhile to get permission from several landowners. Pretty sure his back leg broke after jumping a fence. Ended up catching up to him within a couple hundred yards after that and got him dispatched.

As far as leg shots go, this one was about as simple as they get……The hunter had already tracked (pushed) the deer 600 yards….We turned loose and within 150 yards of where they stopped the dogs had him bayed in the creek. He never even ran.

Went on a really hard track tonight. Hunters stomped it to death. 2hrs into it we jumped him. Dogs made it 600 yards and had to call it due to property lines. He's hurt believe we stand a good chance getting him tomorrow if we can get permission. Bow shot with high shoulder but angled down hard. Alot of arrow in the deer but pretty positive he has both lungs and definitely not gut or liver. Maybe we can find out for sure tomorrow. Brought in the new year standing in waist deep water so that was kind of different I suppose

Couldn't get permission to track him anymore. Maybe he'll live but I have my doubts considering I had to shock my dogs off him to make them quit. They really didn't want to stop which means they knew they'd catch him but is what it is I guess.

Funny story…….Went out last night to check a possible hit on a buck as well as a doe they couldn’t find……This was somewhere I just went to a couple weeks ago….When I pulled up the president of the club was there and was one of the hunters, the other was his son….we’re talking about like a 70 year old and 45 year old just to set the stage for you…..The president starts asking about the track I ran a couple weeks ago and who it was for etc….. saying that they had some pretty strict rules and he was a little suspicious of some things that had been happening with deer getting shot that didn’t meet the requirements….

So fast forward now to us running the track…..Otis picks right up on a blood line and takes us straight to the doe laying 100 yards off the edge of the field…..Only problem was it wasn’t a doe…..it was a button head!!.. shocked ....Oooops!!!! …..I was thinking….”Damn that conversation at the truck didn’t age well!” rofl rofl

Was able to help a young lady locate her first buck. Shot was taken and they watched the buck run into the wood line about 75 yds from the shot. They looked at shot site and were the buck entered the woods and couldn't find any blood. Rain was coming so we were called to assist another guy on the track. We arrived and it had already started raining pretty good. We were able to find a few drops of blood inside the woods to confirm a hit. Scout and Huck made short work of this buck that had only made it about 250 yds and was DOA. Quick track, happy hunter and father and happy dogs but we were still soaked.

Got a call that a 5 year old had shot his first deer and they had tracked it about 80 yards before losing blood. We arrived the next morning and Scout took us to more blood in a thick area. After doing a few circles in the thicket she made a 90 degree turn and headed towards a creek. She paralleled the creek for a way and then bailed off into the creek. She swam to the other side and didn't pick up on anything. She swam back sniffing hard in the water and kept swimming around for a little while. We finally made a few more steps ahead and could see the buck laying in the middle of the creek 30 yds further up. Deer had traveled around 375 yds from shot site. Straight gut shot.

These are the tracks we love, first deer and great buck for a kid.

This deer had been shot head on and hunter saw the deer stumble but could not find any hair or blood. We dropped the dogs and they immediately headed to where he said the deer crossed the fence. They went across a powerline and into the woods and started circling around. I could tell that Scout overrun the trail (tends to do this when there is another dog, she doesn't like to get beat) so I took her back to the fence. She worked a little slower this time to about middle of the powerline where she took a 90 degree turn. Finally about 90 yds from shot site we found the first spot of blood where the buck had crossed a creek. Scout and Huck got on this trail and got to a point where I felt they jumped the deer. We got to that point but there was no blood in the area so we pushed a little further until we come to a deep creek. The buck was spotted on other side of the creek bedded but couldn't get a shot off in time before he got up. We got across the creek and there was not blood in the bed but about 10 yds the way he ran we found another spot of blood. The dogs went forward again to a point and stood there for a bit before returning. I knew the deer had bedded again so we leashed the dogs and eased forward to where the hunter could dispatch the deer. Track ended up being about 850 yds. Deer was shot towards one side catching one lung.

Scout and Huck were able to work together again last night. Brayden (Hucks owner) had a track passed to him that was close to his house. He had not charged his GPS receiver and was going to have to run on lead so I told him I would come help. It was a boys first deer so that always seems to put more pressure on me. We started the track and they lined it out to where the deer had crossed the creek and then 40 yds further, then we were at where they found last blood. We didn't go but 100 yds further or so to where they jumped the deer. Then the chase was on. We continued to about the 1000 yd point to where we saw the deer laying down. I eased up to try and dispatch her but a dog had broke and gotten between us before I could get to it. The deer jumped and ran again. We could tell she was weak, so we just sit there a minute to let things calm down. We then proceeded further to where we found the deer DOA. Total distance was about 1250 yds. Deer was shot through brisket and into top of opposite leg.

Even though it was just a doe, it makes you feel like you recovered a huge buck when its the kids first deer. Late night but well worth it!

Scout and Huck are working well together, recovering 3 for 3 together this season (not counting the verified miss we tracked one night).
