His cattle ranch was in Casa Grande, AZ, the town I lived for a few years after my father retired from the Navy. I actually saw The Duke going into a bank there one day. I was with a friend and his mother tried to get us to go ask for an autograph, but I was scared shatless to as I was about 11 years old and he was intimidating. In real life, he was a big, big man. Really big. NFL lineman sized. Now when I see him in a movie, I feel sorry for the horses he was riding. When Dad was stationed in Corpus Christie, TX the base had a deal for kids that when you turned 7 you could get a movie pass that was like an ID card, which you had to be 12 to get. so getting a movie pass was a rite of passage. During the Summer they had a different movie every day during the week. For $.25 you could get in the movie, get popcorn or candy and a drink. An awful lot of the movies were John Wayne ones. They were not first run movies but were the ones slated for TV and such. That is where I got schooled on his movies. For some reason I can remember going home and recanting to my parents the final scene of Chisolm where the bad guy falls out the second floor window and gets impaled on the Longhorn steer horns.

Not to pee on another man's parade but I never really cared for John Wayne at all. He had an annoying voice, He talked too much to me. And walks funny. Like on his toes. Kinda comes off like he thinks he's special and cute.
I just never liked his character and didn't see why so many did. There's way better actors out there in those days like Robert Mitchum!
Glenn Ford, Lee Marvin, James Arness, Kurt Douglas, Eastwood, Gregory Peck, Lee Van Cleef....John Wayne is way low on my list personally. I have no idea why he starred in so many movies honestly. But that's just me.

John Wayne is good and made good movies, but Cling Eastwood is definitely better.

You nailed it Irish. I won’t say that’s my favorite John Wayne movie but in the top 5. That scene was great with old “Stumpy” Walter Brennan joining in.

The Quiet Man was on TV about every weekend back around the mid 70's it seemed. Maureen O'Hara caused me to develop an unhealthy desire for redheads. Chased after a few and after catching three or four I figured out real quick that was one rodeo I best avoid.

I've probably watched all of them at one point or another, being raised by my grandparents.
I find little interest in most modern movies or TV.
But I'm rewatching all kinds of old westerns and other movies.
Starting with John Wayne. I've watched a number of Clint Eastwood movies as well. I grew up watching Any Which Way You Can and Every Which Way But Loose. Two of my all time favorite movies.
I'm not picky, they are all good in their way. I just finished McLintock. Started The Quiet Man. I'll go through all of them eventually. My wife actually will sit through them with me, which is a bonus.
Another of my all time favorites is Darby O'Gill and the LIttle People. Disney movie with Sean Connery. Excellent movie. Completely unrelated to westerns.
