Seriously the best way to do this is to go take a couple shooting classes this coming spring/summer and you should walk away with enough of an understanding of the basics and the tools to at least get you started.

Ultimately my advise is to scrap the entire thing go get a 300 Weatherby Mag that only drops 24" @ 500 yards and leave the ranging dialing and calculating to the rookies. You can kill things that far more easily with a more strategic setup. 500 is not an easy chip shot for anyone. Even experienced shooters can't do it off a range you have to get the rifle steady I myself passed on a very nice around 150 inch deer last season @ 450 yds. I couldn't get the gun steady and of course this was hanging it out a shooting house window. Didn't take the shot.

I’m assuming that’s with a 300yd zero or else we’re defying physics.

yes and there are other options as far as calibers are concerned. Just look at some ballistic charts to get a feel for what true long range calibers are available.

You can get setup to "hold on hair" pretty easily with the correct cartridge and scope combination out to these distances. It is faster and less complicated IMO. I don't even play around with any of this on a hunting rifle it's doable but just not the best setup IMO for AL as a general statement. There are certainly people who have big hay and row crop fields where they can take long shots but I have hunted in few places in Alabama that I felt like a deer was going to be standing around all day at 500 yards where I had plenty of time to shoot it. But I'm not shooting does either so there is that......

Just my opinion about long range shooting as a theory and the reality of what happens when you actually put it into practice in a hunting scenario. I know exactly what the required investment in range time is to truly be good and I also know exactly how far 500 yards is in reality when you don't have a shooting bench = Too Far

Words of wisdom here. I've shot long range competitions for years but I limit myself on deer to under 500 and that's only from a good rest that I've shot off of and am comfortable with at those ranges.
