I bought a 220 last year from a member on here. No way I would have let that one go. It shoots 1” groups at 100 yards with the Remington Accu Tip slugs. It does have a pretty good bit of recoil so be advised. I have yet to shoot a deer with it but plan on shooting one next year during the IL gun season. It is as deadly as any rifle at 100 yards. You are looking for the right one when you seek out a 220!

It is as deadly as any rifle at 100 yards. Don’t you dare go into hunting situations believing that. Plenty accurate for sure, but a 20 gauge slug gun can’t hold a candle to even lesser high-powered rifles. Deer can tote a 20 gauge Accutip a hell of a long way, even on the best of shots, and you rarely get an exit and a blood trail. Proceed with caution/wisdom, ESPECIALLY if hunting around thickets. Trust me; we have killed a hell of a bunch of deer with slugs, both 20’s and 12’s.

I’ve never seen a deer run with a 12ga accutip. I’ve killed a lot of them with that too. Every one I hit there was no blood trail needed. I use a 870 with rifled barrel.

I still have mine from when it was Slug gun or ML in Indiana. I had mine dead on at 200yds. Shot a couple at 220 yards and dropped them.

I’d use something else in Illinois. I agree with Jughead on this one.

Did kill 2 100 pound does with them last year but both ran off with no blood for the first 50-75 yards then it was tough tracking for the one that ran 250 yards. Both were good shots just poor slug performance. Also grew up in Indiana shooting 12 ga accutips with no issue. Never a run off, never a tracking job longer than 20 yards. As much as I want to shoot a 20 ga slug gun I'm sticking with the 12 ga.

I’ve never seen a deer run with a 12ga accutip. I’ve killed a lot of them with that too. Every one I hit there was no blood trail needed. I use a 870 with rifled barrel. Look at this bloated, stinking, cape and meat ruined heartache and tell me if you think I did my part with a 12 gauge, 3” Accutip at 45 yards quartering away. Not a DROP of blood until very near where he died. No exit on a double lung shot that barely clipped the back of the offside shoulder. And ran a total loop of about 200 yards. Found the next day in 75 degree temps via sheer, dumb luck (and persistence of course). I could share a half dozen similar stories on big bodied, really good bucks that are sheer mysteries on what happened, never to be found, but I already know I’m not gonna change anyone’s mind until they experience it themselves. You’re playing with fire and you’ve been warned, ESPECIALLY if you hunt around thickets and/or somewhere that tracking dogs are not allowed. After this final straw, I just threw the rest of the 12 and 20 Accutips I had left in the trash and never looked back. Back to Lightfield and Hastings which will leave 2 holes on any angle, are extremely accurate considering, leave a hell of a bloodtrail, and most of the time will put his dick in the dirt where he was standing, I don’t care how big he is. If legal where one is hunting, a straightwall rifle cartridge might be even better but not legal on the places I hunt so I can’t speak from experience on those. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.postimg.cc/7ZKVWNZB/IMG-0681.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://i.postimg.cc/XY2wN7Fx/IMG-0685.jpg)

Jug I didn’t post that to start a debate with you or anybody else. That’s a large deer and probably would’ve carried whatever lead you hit it with a long ways. I stated my experience with the 12g accutip. Very nice deer sir.

Mr. Billy is gonna be hunting where there are even bigger deer next year in Illinois, but more undergunned than I was on this particular one. And equal gunned on a couple other big ones we lost with 20 Accutips. I just wanted to make sure he is aware there is quite a bit of risk when it comes to those things, even if they are admittedly scary accurate. Certainly no ill-intent behind my post. Be just fine with me if my fellow hunters NEVER had to endure the 20 or so hours I did surrounding that particular deer.

Is it an accutip penetration or expansion issue or just the 20ga or both that’s the issue? Big deer can tote the mail, but I’ve never slug hunted them. Sorry to the Op for the thread running off in the ditch, good luck with the 220...

Sorry to the Op for the thread running off in the ditch, good luck with the 220... The accutip has the poly cones shaped tip that’s designed to disintegrate on impact. It’s for aerodynamics only (and works very well). After that it’s just a 365g (12 ga) chunk of lead with a lot of energy. It’s just a very heavy low velocity bullet that’s very accurate. It’s not designed to really penetrate and have an exit. The deer takes the full load of energy from the bullet. If it runs then yes you’d need to keep an eye on it because it won’t spray blood like with a rifle. Last deer I shot with one was at 110yds and it literally knocked him off of his feet. Obviously some haven’t had a good experience with them, but you can list every caliber in the book and there will be people that have had bad experiences with all calibers.
