I will tell you this. I had an 800 ac tract to flag and get harvested. adjoining "overseer" told me to make sure loggers came to see him for "security". I did not see it, but couple days later he had shot one and had it in the back of his truck. Logger died of cancer, but it was Gathen Burns from Piedmont. The way he described it and what it looked like gave me chills knowing I was out there in the woods with it. Gathen and his dad Carl were no BS people. If they said it happened, it did.

If there was an area that would support them it would be Duggar Mountain and northeast through Spring Garden into Ga. A lot of roadless woods there. I think the Duggar Mt. area is the largest tract of roadless timber in Al. if I'm not mistaken.

One thing this thread about this thread, it damn sure entertaining. It also amazes me that someone could have such a strong opinion because it's never happened to them. I don't believe in bigfoot or aliens, but hey if you were probed or shared a slim Jim with squatch I'll listen with an open mind. Kinda....

Male mountain lions are travelers and cover vast areas. Pretty easy to believe at any given time there is one or two in Bama. Anywhere with a good deer herd would be attractive to them as deer are a primary food source.

It's kind of misleading to think "hey, they are in Florida and we share a border with Florida so hey man panthers are right on our border." Ahhh, no. Florida panthers are in the extreme southwestern part of the state. From Alabama's southeast corner it's about 540 miles down to their home range. And keep in mind that is the distance for one to make into Alabama south of Dothan. Waaaay longer trip for them to make it to the northern half of the state. For some perspective. Travel 540 miles northeast from Alabama's north east corner and you are past Richmond Virginia and damn near to Washington DC. Go 540 miles due north and you are in Chicago. 540 miles due west from our western state line and you are between Forth Worth and Dallas. 540 miles northwest from our northwest corner and you are nearly in Kansas City. So it's not some little afternoon stroll. Also people tend to think that if something is technically possible that this means it's likely to happen. No. You could walk out of your house tomorrow and be hit by a basketball sized meteorite while also being struck by lightening at the same precise moment. Possible? Yes. But so RIDICULOUSLY improbable that it will likely never happen to anyone ever. Not saying the odds are that long of a Panther making it up to us but it's certainly waaaay less likely than than the believers suggest.

A study published in the Journal of Wildlife Management in 2012 compiled confirmed locations of cougars collected outside of their established range during 1990-2008.
The results of the study suggest that the cougar is recolonizing the Midwest with a range expansion eastward. It is well documented that cougars travel hundreds of miles in search of new territory. The recent confirmed sightings in Tennessee could be a result of this range expansion and long exploratory treks by transient cougars.
This expansion does not equate to population establishment. Population establishment only occurs where reproducing females are documented.
