It takes the place of No Trespassing signs. Poachers can't tear the paint off like signs. I've always contended , it shouldn't matter the color, but I didn't get a vote.
I think the color is because other states implemented purple paint prior to Alabama so for consistency reasons it made sense to stick with purple.
