^^^ Congrats - look forward to pics Last night’s deer turned out to be a double leg hit…..Got back on him this morning and Otis pretty much ran straight to him about another 300 yards from where we jumped him last night…..I heard Otis let out a few barks out ahead of us like he was on bay and suddenly here he comes running a coyote by us….I toned Otis off of him and hollered at the coyote to try to get him to go on be you could tell he wasn’t really scared and was looking for a meal. Otis got back on the track and jumped the buck about 40-50 yards further down the trail…..He took him about 200 yards and the buck locked down and gave up….When we moved in to dispatch the buck the coyote was right back on him with Otis…..Otis was barking and baying and the coyote was making a little bigger circle out around the deer…..First time I’ve had that happen…….Here’s the original shot……. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/BG1W6Xp.jpg) Heck of a first deer for a youth……… ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/Pa4Me93.jpg)

Got a call Friday night from a guy that had shot at a buck twice with muzzleloader but couldn't find any blood. He was sure he was hit so we loaded up and headed that way. After a little while of trying to figure out where the deer was standing we found a spot of blood. There was blood for 10' or so and nothing else. Pretty easy track, he had only went about 175 yds down in a ravine but there was no more blood until we got to the deer. Looked like he tried to jump a fence and collapsed and rolled on the other side. Thick horned 10pt. https://sharedalbums.b-cdn.net/9f264a98-6420-4a94-8188-c433eff8e3f6.jpg?class=display

Went to help a lady on her first deer Saturday about midday that had been shot early that morning. We took the track and the deer went up the side of a mountain leaving very little blood but what blood was there looked fairly dark. We made it to the top of the mountain (about 550 yds from shot site) and got to seeing more blood. At this point we were at a property line and they were calling to get permission. The guy went back down and got on the UTV and drove around to knock on the door. We were granted permission so I told him just to stay there since we were headed that way.
We continued the track about another 200 yds to where Scout started working slow and looking ahead with head in the air. I felt the buck was laying close but never laid eyes on him. Another 50 yds further and more blood but this is wet and fresh. We continued ahead and worked out into a front yard where he had parked to the UTV. Unfortunately, he was behind the house looking in the woods and the deer run through the front yard. At this point the buck crossed the road onto another property. The guy was riding around out in the field and she stopped him to ask if we could track onto his property. We were told NOPE, I don't allow anyone on my property. At this point (1300 yds into the track we had to call it).
I was afraid the buck was gut/liver shot and we had pushed it too soon. I was sure it was going to lay up and die but they got pictures of him last night. Shot was forward of shoulder.
I'm still not sure what I was seeing that looked like dark blood, guess just they way it was on darker leaves.

Got one lined up for this evening. Sounds like we'll be baying him if we catch up to him.

This morning’s track ended up being hit in the armpit and out the front of the brisket. The arrow didn’t look good at all. It didn’t even really look like it had passed through the deer other than a small smear of fat and blood on one fletching…..At about the 200 yard mark though it bled pretty good…..We kept tracking it until Otis ran into a big sounder of pigs along the track and it blew up the whole thing…..I don’t know if the sow got on him or what but he started baying up ahead of us and next thing I know he’s hauling ass back to the truck. At this point I didn’t know it was pigs and was thinking maybe the buck got on him and boogered him up….. So we get back to the truck and check him out to make sure he’s ok and decide to go back with all three dogs to see how hurt the deer may be. Turn them all three loose and next thing you know we hear pigs squealing and running every direction. My lab grabbed about a 40 pounder and had it down by the throat when we caught up to them. Needless to say it kinda put a damper on trying to get back on the deer. I think he’s likely just got a bad flesh wound though. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/mlXo8Z7.jpg)

Got to go on another last night for a guy I had tracked for in the past. He had shot him and then jumped him up about 75 yds from shot site. He backed out and gave me a call. I wanted to wait and go until this morning but he couldn't get out of work so we decided to give it till 10 PM. Fairly straight forward and easy track except it was through a briar/honey locust thicket and you had to watch or thorns would be in your eyeballs. The buck had traveled another 150 yds or so and crossed a creek and started to loop back to where he fell dead. https://sharedalbums.b-cdn.net/683db495-a20d-451c-a5f1-a5478c0d7548.jpg?class=display

I forgot about one funny part of today’s track……There were three of us today on the track….Me, the hunter, and his buddy…..After I let all three dogs loose, Ruby had the pig by the throat in the bottom below us and it was squealing like hell with pigs scattering all around us…..My other dog Lu-lu looped around behind us without the hunters knowing and came running by us brushing up against the buddies leg as she passed….He thought it was one of the pigs and he jumped up in the air and squealed out thinking one of them had done got him. It would have been a good moment to have on camera.

Found a really nice 11 point this morning…..Buck was shot yesterday evening…..Hit was a little back about the liver/gut area….Hunter followed decent blood for about 150 yards before the deer got in some real thick stuff and he decided to back out…..It ended going about 400 yards total and was a pretty routine recovery……… ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/wIOLFX0.jpg)

I sure hate to see bow season come to an end…..The tracking game is about to completely change this weekend. Folks can say what they want to about bows and crossbows but there’s a lot more lead that’s just “slung” at deer than there are arrows and bolts….Bring on all the “I’ve got 2 drops of blood and was aiming right behind the shoulder” calls
