If I personally was hunting big mature deer only,. Even though I could kill them with an AR. I'd want something a little bigger. That being said, there's folks that cant kill deer with 300 win mags. There is a point were the bigger guns cause people to become less accurate. It effects everyone to some degree. Sometimes, starting a woman or child on a bigger caliber to quickly can effect their accuracy dramatically for a long time. If you can kill something with a bow and arrow, you can kill it with an AR/223. If you can shoot accurately and choose shots that you would with a bow, the deer doesn't stand a chance, especially at short yardage,

Agree. I had a 45-50lb average 8 year boy old shooting a .350 Legend last year...
Sounds like we solved this issue. Otherwise maybe the kid is too young or needs more practice.

Sounds like we solved this issue. Otherwise maybe the kid is too young or needs more practice. He's a good shot. He can shoot an AR all day with a scope or red dot. He shoots a .22 with iron sights. I worry about going to big with a caliber and causing poor shooting technique. I was given a 30.06 for my first gun. To this day, I have to think about the shoot or I'll flinch. I don't want that to happen to him. I'm not worried about him making a bad shot, just want the best chance. He's 10 and a decent size boy, so I may be over thinking it.

True. Several years ago when I was shooting at Cahaba WMA range, a man set up on the bench next to me with his young boy, probably about 10 yo. He made that kid shoot an entire box of ammo through a 30 06. Kid was in serious pain but good ol dad was gonna make him shoot til he stopped flinching. Moronic.

30-06 was my first rifle as well. Dad set it up, sighted it in and we adjusted it to me and after that, honestly, I shot it sparingly. Not because I was afraid but because I didn’t shoot many deer at all the first few years. Then I bought myself a nicer Zeiss scope and went to sight it in myself. I didn’t know what I do today. I chased that bullet all over the target and went through about two boxes of shells. It was punishing(the butt on that skeleton Ruger didn’t help). I developed a flinch that I was years getting past again. That is still my go-to rifle when something positively has to die. But I’m just as likely to carry my little Ruger American in 300blk to my woods stand where shots are only about 150 max and usually 75-100. I don’t need anything heavier. If I’m after hogs I’ll bring the AR version but it’s actually a little unwieldy in the ladder stand.

I can't help anyone with flinching.... that is a different problem all together.
Effectively this is trying to tell me a kid who can shoot a 20ga at a Dove can't handle anything more than an AR?
Not so. Needs more practice. That's on y'all. Nobody is suggesting put a 30-06 in their hands I've certainly never said anything remotely of the sort.
Here is how I solved that issue... I use the .350 for all the kids that come hunt. I know that each of them can shoot an AR in .223 because that is what we practice with during the Summer. Most of these kids.... their dad don't hunt or own a rifle. These are not my kids but I'm friends with their parents, etc. and they come down to hunt. They just want to come down and hang out at the farm really.
I don't tell them I switched the caliber. Not 1 single kid has been able to tell the difference. All smiles... dead deer. No looking all over 1/2 the county.

Every deer weve killed with a 62gr fusion were mature bucks. Well, atleast 3yo or older. Mature for around here. None were tracked. All fell within sight. All their insides gushed out when we hung them up and stuck a knife in them. On a dime every time at 100yds. Very little kick. The gun is a pleasure to shoot, except for the deer. They didnt like it. That high shoulder shot some of yall like, that might not work, youre not breaking both front shoulders probably. But that low, behind the front shoulder shot, thatll get it done every time.

The 62qr 223, 120gr 6.5 Grendel, and the 115gr in 6.8spc are all bad news on a whitetail. To bad the Grendel and 6.8 is almost impossible to find.

AR10 .308 is the way!!! Don't have one? Doesn't everybody need a .30 caliber battle rifle? This is what I was going to suggest too.

To the OP, why would you want to hunt with an AR? I just watched a clip from that great bastion of knowledge, "The View", where the genius Joy Behar, explains that if you shoot a deer with an AR then it is rendered inedible. So why in the world would you want to hunt with one if you can't eat it? (Sarcasm button off).
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
