Bullet choice and shot placement matter more than what the rifle is chambered in.
From .223 to .50Beowulf they will all kill.
Fusions, Partitions, SGK, etc …. Well built bullets that will penetrate while expanding reliably and consistently

.223 is too small the worst thing that might happen for a kid is to shoot a deer with that.... and lose the deer. That risk is obviously ok for a lot of people on here as they don't appear to be trophy hunting but rather just shooting "deer". I guess if they look for it for 5 minutes and don't find it.... they just shoot another one. If there is no reason for it...then why open up that world of possibilities?. If the kid can't handle the recoil only then does that become a different story IMO.
.350 will smoke a deer. That's what I would get. I always see ammo available which is a separate issue but something to consider moving away from .223

I have a 450 BM and absolutely love it for close range woods or small field work. I have a 6.5 Grendel, when I get it to run, I am anxious to see how it does. My grendel is a 20 inch barrel, they seem to think the longer barrel helps with velocity.
Ruger makes an SFAR which is sort of like an AR15 frame 308. Had I known about it, I would have gotten one of those. I do have a PSA AR-10, and its really not much longer than my 450BM. It's a little bigger and clunkier, but not enough to worry with.
I will say if you want an AR10, DO NOT get one from Bear Creek.
The best thing about a black rifle for me is how you sling it. Mine are all hands free, and hang on my chest. If you keep a hand on the pistol grip, they come into battery in a flash and are dead nuts silent, it won't slip off your shoulder, and you don't have to carry it in your hands all the stinking time. Biggest issue is you probably don't need to run an extended charging handle.
They have a bunch of options, a 350 Legend would be another option and its pretty cheap as far as ammo goes. I almost got one of those when I got my credit on the BCA 308 upper, but got the Grendel instead, and it won't run ammo either......

I have killed deer with .223, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8spc2, 350 legend and 7.62x39. All killed them just as dead as the other. 7.62x39 is my favorite with the 350 legend as a close 2nd.

300 BO is my favorite, stay within 150 yards with 110-125 gr bullet. That’s all I hog hunt with. if you have a recoil shy kid you could always start em out with the slower sub-sonic loads ( especially for practice) and move up to heaver-faster loads when they're ready.. very easy to change out barrel from 223 to 300 BO- youtube is your friend

I got one from Sgt of arms in Ft Worth that’s a 6.5 creedmore. It’s more accurate than I am. It’s what I carry when I’m watching the east facing slope on a big clear cut, cold crisp morning. It’s too heavy to carry anywhere else much

If I were doing it again, the 300 HAMR would be high on the list.

The Barnes 110gr VOR-TX in 300 Blackout works well inside 150 yds. If you go that route, be sure to keep the 300 ammo away from your 223/556. You don’t want to get those mixed up and send the wrong one down the barrel. I use a little 10rd mag for hunting and only put 300 in it. Any 30 rnd mags I use for 300 get a band of orange electrical tape with 300 written on it.

A .223 or .243 will work with perfect shot placement.children and women are usually the least accurate. Why would you want the person with the least experience trying to make the hardest shot?

I have a ruger SFAR it’s .308 16” Barrel and around 8#. Awesome gun, short, light weight, and minimal kick. Unlimited ammo choices and As a bonus it will reach out and touch them.

If I personally was hunting big mature deer only,. Even though I could kill them with an AR. I'd want something a little bigger. That being said, there's folks that cant kill deer with 300 win mags. There is a point were the bigger guns cause people to become less accurate. It effects everyone to some degree. Sometimes, starting a woman or child on a bigger caliber to quickly can effect their accuracy dramatically for a long time. If you can kill something with a bow and arrow, you can kill it with an AR/223. If you can shoot accurately and choose shots that you would with a bow, the deer doesn't stand a chance, especially at short yardage,
How you do anything is how you do everything
