Yep, seeing them all over the place, but mostly in the deep bottoms. Acorns are dropping heavy, so they are foraging for those and moving around a lot. Find good sign and start slipping through the woods slowly and listen for em. You'll hear them before you see them.

I'm planning on going over there Saturday. For hog hunting, do you have to go by the check station the morning of the hunt and get a permit like you do for gun deer hunts? I know you have to have a WMA license and a black warrior map/permit, but there is a separate thing you have to have for gun deer hunts and I don't know if you need it for the hog hunts too.

You do not have to go by the check station before the hunt. If you kill a hog then you have to check-in the hog at the check in station before you leave the wma. Which means just write the hog down on the sheet of paper outside the headquarters.
All you need, as a resident of Alabama, is a annual hunting license, annual fishing license, lifetime license, or wildlife heritage license. Hogs are considered small game and therefore the wildlife heritage license, which is included with most licenses when you purchase them, allows you to hunt small game on all state wma's without purchasing the management area license. You will need to stop by somewhere and get a wma map permit, a lot of the gas stations around bankhead have them, and they are also at the wma headquarters. Sign and date the map permit and your ready to go.

I'm headed down this weekend with the bow. I'm more concerned about setting some lost waypoints for bowseason. But if I see a hog, I'll try and stick him!

Do you mean hunting on national forest land or wma land? The rules and regs are very different.

I'm going to head out to Bankhead after lunch today. I really don't know what I'm doing. If anyone has any advice for a first time hog hunter on where to start out there, that would be great. We'll see what happens.

Get the map on the permit and find a creek. Walk it and walk it you will see sign. A side north is where I've seen the most, that's just me though. A blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then so I may have been lucky. Good luck. I'll be there Sunday.

Print a map at home before you leave(both sides) the ones at the check-in station are still at the printers. Bring plenty of bug spray, ammo and luck. [img:left] [/img] A small boar, it's a little one but it's one less.

Heard one but didn't see any. Acorns are falling all over some green, some ripe. Lots of signs of tearing stuff up. Good to be back in the woods.

When do we get to call it skill instead of luck? I think we're gettin pretty good at this. ( I mean you shot a wild hog with a pistol!) Some people will never do that (ME).

My brother and I went out Saturday afternoon and hiked almost 2 miles back into the Sipsey wilderness area. TONS of sign, and a lot of it fresh too. I am not an experienced hog hunter at all. That was actually my first attempt at it. But I have hunted and been in the woods my whole life and I have never seen pig sign like that anywhere else. It was crazy how much rooting and how many tracks there were all over the place. We saw one set of tracks that was so unbelievably large that I don't think anyone would believe me if I said how big they were. Didn't shoot anything. Didn't even see any actual pigs, but had a great time getting out in the woods with family. Congrats smccord on your kill.

Them pigs are very illusive in bankhead. Good luck out there and kill them all.

I think we learned a valuable lesson on our last successful trip: Walk in a ways and listen more than looking. If we had not stopped to listen and kept walking and looking we would have walked within 30yds of 8-10 of them. And they will let you walk that close or closer without running.
It is what it is.

Went today saw a lot of sign but never saw the first one. Also heard some on way in. Are they moving at night? Any ideas?
