And also, did the hunter push the deer looking for the deer before you got there? Not that we're aware of....although there is the possibility that he saw their flashlight around the 200-250 yard mark where we suspected he may have bedded.

Then maybe it was the insert not being installed right?

Then maybe it was the insert not being installed right? Its really hard to say for 100% sure without us cutting it open and examining a little closer......Are you a Rage sales rep??

Nope just never had a problem with one. What are you assuming went wrong to not have penetration? I've had broadheads open in flight and still do way better than that.

I really don’t know on this one…… It appears that the broadhead opened judging by the size of the entry hole. The more I’ve sat back and analyzed it and listened to what others are saying……..I’d say that BCLC may have called it right with the bow tuning issue combined with a light arrow.

Most likely scenario is the broadhead centered a rib on entry. A hard impact will sometimes shatter the adhesive on the insert, which causes the insert to pull out. Or, the insert wasn’t installed properly to begin with. That deer making it that far is not because of a broadhead failure. It was because of shot placement and it was bumped. I’ve killed a pile of deer with a bow with both fixed and mechanical heads. Never seen this mythical broadhead failure happen. You do give up penetration with mechanicals and hard quartering shots with them are bad juju. And like you stated earlier, a lot of people are shooting improperly tuned bows with them.
Another thing that’s a myth is the “heavy arrow” craze nowadays. The penetration with a 400gr arrow traveling 300fps vs a 600gr arrow traveling 230fps is negligible out of modern compounds because they are so efficient. With trad bows, it absolutely matters. Ranch Fairy is full of chit.

Shaw I know you probably are way more up to date than me on modern equipment. I shot tournaments all over Alabama but that was in the late 70,s and early 80,s when things were simpler. We shot 2413’s with overdraws back then and probably only shot 240 fps I can’t really remember. I watched somebody elephant hunting one time and he put a 1916 inside of I think a 2117 for penetration. Therefore I may be totally wrong but I switched to piledrivers this year for my Excalibur because they were heavier. I know there is probably a formula out there but wouldn’t that extra weight get you more penetration I have no idea how many fps I lost

Agree with every word of this. I have shot plenty of deer with about a 400 gr arrow using both mechanical and fixed blade heads from a very modestly powered bow. Never had a problem with penetration. If you are having to use a two blade fixed head screwed into an arrow that weights as much as a 28 inch section of rebar in order to get adequate penetration on a whitetail in Alabama then there is something seriously wrong with either your bow or how it's set up. (Screw that Ranch Fairy BS) First I'd check the bow to see if the words Playskool or Mattel were written on it anywhere. If so I'd return it to the store you got it from and tell them that you want to trade it in for a bow that doesn't come from the toy section. Then tune your new real bow properly. Don't screw on a mech head as a cover step. Set it up right or get someone that knows how to set it up right. Arrows fish tailing or porpoising will penetrate poorly. It is also your responsibility to know how big of a diameter broadhead your bow is powerful enough to use. You do not have to use heads that open to 2 or more inches in diameter if you have a lighter weight bow or have a short draw length. I have used 1 3/8 cut Grim Reapers for years and had no problems at all.

I know there is probably a formula out there but wouldn’t that extra weight get you more penetration I have no idea how many fps I lost This explains the different formulas used to determine kinetic energy and momentum. The small amount you gain in penetration with the two arrow setup’s I mention is small compared to the accuracy you’re going to give up loosing 60fps. I’m not a speed freak. But, you give up that much speed, you will miss the vitals on a deer if you misjudge the distance by 3 or 4 yards at 30 yards. Mash Here

Really the only information needed. If I thought they were all gonna stand perfectly broadside at 20 steps then no problem. But that’s not reality. And I’ve experimented with a couple mechanical styles, I’ll admit that. Just seen enough to be nervous about them.

I shot slam thru a does hindquarters at 65 yards. I shouldn't have been shooting that far and she jumped at the shot. That was with a 29.5 inch draw matthews switchback pulling less than 70 lbs. I was shooting either a nap kill zone or a rage.
We will burn that bridge when we get there

Thank you Shaw I figured there was more information out there . I shot a bear takedown hunter recurve up till 2013 . But after I got hurt it’s a Excalibur crossbow with a crank now. Not as challenging but I love being in the woods
