anybody know someone that likes to tinker on antique tractors? my GF has an old Farmall tractor that she’s wanting to get back running ... we’re in Lamar County - shoot me a PM if you know anybody
TIA,
BGD

wish this kid lived close by - https://youtu.be/CDiDg_OIi1Y?si=qwuMQ4fSbul0IBay - he does some great work on old Farmall & John Deere tractors ... great to see “kids” getting into this kind of work

Them old Farmall gas engines ain’t real fancy. How long it been since it’s run? Will it turn over with a charged battery?

it’s sat a couple of years & yes the engine turns over - i’ve been told that it had some sort of a fuel issue 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you were closer, my 14 year old would be all over this. He loves tinkering with old tractors.

I’d start with cleaning the carb, changing or cleaning the sediment bowl, checking the fuel line for blockage, replacing the spark plugs and maybe clean the points on the distributor and maybe get a tune up kit for the ignition.

10-4 - it’s a little Super A Farmall - it’s setup with a deck mower which I’ll remove ... we just want to get it running to put around on (for sentimental reasons)

Jeremy, I wish he did too 🤠 we’re in Lamar Co

Get rid of the fuel and clean the carb really good. Probably an up-draft carb, so choke will need to work. I would replace the points and condenser if available. If the Eng. has compression, it will run.

the gas tank was bone dry, as well as the carb (tore it down today, all looks good on it) - fuel lines are open & free - has an inline filter that’s toast so we’re get a new one

got new plugs but it needs wires - i’m thinking now that it probably had a spark issue - but we’ll know more soon ... got a new battery so we’ll be able to turn the engine over soon

welp - i have spark now ... got new plug wires & plugs installed, confirmed the starter works & turned the engine over with a new battery - but saw no spark in the distributor ... got some feeler gauges, set the gap at 20 thousandths (after sanding everything down & cleaning it up real good), and got good spark at the points ... put the cap back on, pulled a plug, held it against the engine & had spark at the plug ... we poured some fuel in (and some Seaform), started turning the engine over & it did not fire up ... we did get a voltage meter & i confirmed that we’re getting voltage to everything correctly ...

i’m thinking now it’s just a matter of setting the timing (iow putting the 1st cylinder at top dead center) & then try to get it started ...

You know who the mechanic for you tractor will be? You. smile Get a manual if there is such a thing, and do it yourself. You might as well, it's going to need work from time to time.

got it running today - set the timing & it fired up & ran for a short time ... it won’t idle & stay running - seems like it’s flooding out - so now it’s back to the carb to diagnose what’s going on with it ...

Carb probably need a good cleaning and set up. I've ordered numerous kits from this guy, https://www.carburetor-parts.com/. Good quality and they usually come with a rebuild/setup manual. He's really good about responding to email of questions, technical stuff too.

good news to report - i got her purring like a kitten ... twiddled with the air/fuel mixture needle & it cranked & ran for a while ... shut it down & started it right back up no problem ... got the air pump out & inflated the left rear tire enough to move it out from behind the shop & into the main shop & threw a jack stand under it ...

thx for all the tips & encouragement ... my GF cried like a baby 🥰🤠😃. she was so happy
