Are mechanical broadheads pretty much disposable? Seems every brand I have tried has had some issue that makes them a one time use with the occasional one being multiple use before it too is done.

And to be clear, I’m not talking about the blades I’m talking about the body itself

I use spitfire pro series and they have held up really well over the years. You have to replace the blades of course but their durable

Wife shot one Saturday morning with a rage hypodermic high in the back all the way through the body and out the back hind quarter did not hit leg bone. Cleaned it up and put in new blades ready to go. I killed a 130 pound 8 pointer last year same results. Shot one to far forward a few years ago through the front leg went through same results. We have killed a bunch with them and never had a problem. About 20 years ago I had one I think opened in flight never found the deer or arrow but they were made different then. They were on sale at cabelas for 19.99 for 3.

I’ve found that to be the case on most broadheads with aluminum ferrules whether fixed or mechanical. You hit heavy bone or anything hard it will outright bend the ferrule or they will no longer spin true. The only durable aluminum ferrule heads I’ve ever used are the old school Muzzy’s or the Musaccchia NBS fixed heads.

I can say that Rage Trypans are not worth the money, I’ve had three that the tip curled up on them after a pass through and going into the dirt. Rage Chisel tips as well as one of my Swhacker’s have bent in the middle to where I couldn’t get the blades to retract.

Only issue I’ve ever had out of the Trypans is an occasional bent blade.

I shoot SEVR mechanical and have killed 2 hogs with one broadhead and its still sharp and ready for deployment again
I will say the tip did bend slightly on the last kill but is still sharp

Most of the time my grim reapers are fine unless I hit something really hard.

With the boulders in the ground on our property, they’re always a one shot broadhead. Doesn’t matter the material. Hell, I’ve shattered a few arrow shafts after they have past through deer.

Only issue I’ve had with Grim Reapers is if they hit a rock on pass through. Just change blades. I shoot the 1-3/8” cut

IMO - mechanical broad heads are made for compound bows, but not crossbows (all the blades don’t always open and sometimes they open in the air). If you shoot a decent crossbow, go fixed blade - it will still be a pass through

I’ve got some NAP killzone’s that I’m going to try just to see what the entry wound/blood trail is like. I may stick with the Swhackers since they have held up better than the others that I’ve tried.

Me an my brother ustah just go to bow shops..or walmart🤷🏻…an just buy whatever broadheads looked good in texas..we had to kill so many deer anyway that the ranch bought arras an heads…we have literally sit in a ground blind..shot 5 deer..with 5 different broadheads..just to see what happens..i have my oppinions on the ones that are worth a flip..an the ones that are gimmicky junk..but..pretty much all of them broke after a deer or 2…the original schwackers an rages probly held up the best…those older schwackers with the thick blades are a dang beast of a head…i have no idea how many we could kill with a single head..ive kilt several with the same head..heck..ive kilt several pigs with that red practice schwacker🤷🏻…theys some new stuff out now that wudnt around then that we never tried..but we ustah lay waste tooem an we used it all..ive kilt a few with them killzones…they make a bog hole..but the little channels where the blade rides are thin an they will break off alot…id say the worst head i ever seen was them g5 meat seakers…idk what the heck their problem was..but about half the time them dang things wouldnt open right..still make a decent hole..but when they did like they was supposed to..dangit theyd nock a hole in a deer. I kilt a dump truck load with hypodermics..them was good little heads an my brother still shoots the trypans..they are kinda iffy on the opening..ive seenem do strange things..an thats me seein like 10 deer a weekend shot withem as thats the main head our guests used..them an ramcats..theyll nock a dang hole in something too. Idk what all we ahot stuff with…we shot so much crap out there we run arras over with the bushog…idk how many pig carcasses ive found 2 or three months after season with a arra stickin outa a scoulder blade or something..the schackers are tuff tho..i still shoot them and my trusty old vortex…vortex wudnt the toughest heads…but they flew dang good an cut a deer half in 2. I wouldnt relate our experience with alabama quantity wise..but as far as testin a broadhead…we tried about everything..an just about everything did the trick just fine if you slip it in the ribs an get an exit wound..if it flies good..dont be too picky.

I have always used Rage broad heads. Couple years ago i bought those cheap Chinese knockoffs off ebay and Amazon. Someone said they are Rage. Either way, i have killed 4 or 5 deer with them and have not had an issue. Leaves a big hole just like a Rage and i have like 3 dozen. All but one could have been reused. For like a dollar a piece i just chunk them and grab a fresh one. These are the hypodermic version. I just decided to test for myself. I killed 2 last year with them and no issues.

I’ve killed about 30-35 deer with Wasp expandables. As long as I get a pass through and don’t hit a rock on the exit I can kill several deer with the same head.

Original Rage and stocked up on replacement blades to last me as little as I get to bowhunt these days. Makes a nice hole with lots of blood.

I have killed a pile with the jackhammers too. Never had a problem with them at all.
