For those of you who have one, I'm switching scopes on my pre 64 Model 70. Any suggestions on mounts and rings? My scope is 30mm. I didn't want to put a Picatinny rail on it, but some of the best options for rings I like will fit one. I also want to be able to change out the scope with ease.

Talley vertical split steel rings and bases.
If you want to be able to swap scopes get the QD rings.

Are you running low, medium, or high with the rings?

Are you running low, medium, or high with the rings? With 30mm tubes I can clear up to a 44mm objective with no problem and some 50mm objectives will clear with lows, depends on scope length, barrel profile, and contour. Middle pic is a 50mm Leica mounted in Vortex Pro Lows 0.90”. You can see it only clears because of the aggressive barrel contour and would likely hit if it had any less taper.

Here’s a pre-‘64 Featherweight with the Warne bases. The best part of the Warne bases is they’ll take any ring that fits picatinny or weaver rails. Sorry I don’t have any pics with larger scope objectives on a pre-‘64. For scale, that’s a 2.5-8x36 ![[Linked Image]](https://i.postimg.cc/85x0mk85/7500-F598-2737-4687-B46-D-A49601-A6620-D.jpg)

Weaver style rings on 2 piece base has been getting it for what..... 80+ years or something on a Model 70..... seems pretty simple.
I don't think your weaver style bases matter that much as long as they are a quality name brand.... but I would put Burris Signature Rings on it if it were mine.

FWIW - putting two 50mm bells on a couple rifles. One is a CZ and other is a custom Mauser. I ordered all three heights of Weaver Grand Slam mounts. Turns out the low mount height will do fine with plenty of clearance on both rifles with 50 mm bells.

Some of the ring height selection has to do with specific scope objective contour, barrel contour, available tube length real estate, and your desired final eye piece position. I guess what I’m saying I’ve had scopes mount before where, yes, the objective bell cleared but it was mounted too far forward for my comfort to get a good eye box feel. I ended up needing medium rings unexpectedly. I think this occurs more which 50mm scopes than 44.

I put the talley one piece extra high rings on my 7mm-08 model 70. I had to go with the extra high rings because I put a zeiss conquest V4 3-12x56mm on it.

FWIW: ‘low’ rings on top of rails/rail sections are about the equivalent of med (or even high) Talley one piece stuff in ring height. It’s easy to get height clearance with bases and rings. It’s hard to get anywhere near as low as going with base/mount combos, though some setups get close.

OP had 2 wishes
1) to use same rings as pic rail but without the rail
2) easily be able to swap scopes
