I remember the “real”, 20-box cases well. What they call cases now are what we used to call flats. Flats only had 10 boxes. Usually we all carried a flat i to the field to start with. Been on many dove hunts that we’d burn thru nearly a case - and we could shoot pretty good too! I used to burn thru over 2 cases during duck season - thats what actually got me started reloading ! Those were the days and great times too…

I'm 58 and I remember shooting a blue million paper hull Winchester XX low brass. Some of those were reloads though.

I was thinking back - I believe when I got my .410 (I was 8), the first shells I had were paper. It’s been so long I am not sure.

Now I have seen a lot of paper hulls, my great-uncle had a 10-gauge that as best I can recall only had paper hulls.

We went the other way. The local country store sold them loose. We’d pick up returnable bottles and take other change there, where we could buy .22s for $.02 and 12 ga. 6’s for $.04 each. We’d buy a handful of each and have our ammo for the weekend. We did a lot more small game hunting back then because deer were few and far between.

$20 for a case. 500 shells for 20 bucks.

I remember buying my first box of 22 shorts at the Western Auto in Jay. 37 cents and no one asked for my ID.

Yep. Those cases made a good seat on a dove field.
