Unions might be necessary in a few very niche career fields but what UAW is doing right now is negotiating their workers out of a job. You think just because they move to a southern state they won’t be unionized. We are a right to work state. Doesn’t mean they can’t unionize. Just means you don’t have to join the union if one is present. Mercedes workers benefit greatly from the UAW. It makes Mercedes pay better and it isn’t just cause they want to. If they don’t they will get unionized and they don’t want that. Same for Toyota and Honda and the others. Although everyone I talk to at Honda says it ain’t all that great. I dunno tho. I guess labor jobs should just all work for minimum wage and let management folks reap all the benefits. Maybe then everyone will be happy. Except for the laborers of course. But us laborers don’t really matter. We are just peons who don’t deserve to have anything in this world except what those college educated management folks want us to have.
I’m not against guys getting a pay raise but at some point if you feel your pay isn’t adequate for the labor you put forth then there are other jobs out there. There’s a crap ton of ways to learn other skills that can bring more money in. You can blame those folks in management that are supposedly keeping all that profit for themselves but you voluntarily work for them. I’m one of those college educated folks and haven’t had a pay raise in a while. If this persists I’ll weigh my options. That’s just the nature of the beast. I don’t need a Union or anyone else negotiating what I’m worth other than me.
I highly doubt you’ll see any unionization here because most folks know that if it happens the foreign manufacturers will up and leave. Also, a competitive market benefits the worker whether you think it or not. The last thing the Japanese, Koreans, or Germans want is to have their factory shut down because their workers go find employment elsewhere. And there’s more competition moving in every year. The majority of unions have outlived their usefulness. How much of that pay increase are they taking from their members? How much of the Union bosses pay are they going to use to pay workers once the factories shutter?
