Love reading this stuff. Prices are gonna go up because the hourly guys get a raise. What a joke. These auto manufacturers are making record profits and the hourly guys make an average of 65k a year. While execs are getting 20 million dollar bonuses. What’s really causing the price increase? Most of you hate unions so bad you refuse to see the real reason cars are so expensive. These execs are making stupid money and people keep buying vehicles at these stupid prices. Which gives record profits for several years in a row. But I guess only execs and stockholders should get a piece of that pie. Screw the hourly guys right? Some of you guys are pathetic "Fair" is what the free market allows. I know it sucks, but I would rather see American made vehicles stay around for me to purchase than for the US based industry to disappear. There are non-union auto plants apparently thriving with employees happy to work there. See Mercedes. From what I understand, the union is inefficient due to roadblocks on poor performers being fired, and prioritizing length of service being the criteria for promotion. That inefficiency = extra cost to the final product. Just the way it is. I will try hard as possible to buy an American truck next time around, but if they make it cost prohibitive I just won't be able to do it.

All this is going to result in the price of trucks going even higher it's ridiculous. Most auto plants work a lot of overtime I suspect they want the 32 he work week so everything over 32 is overtime? F em.

I also suspect most people will be keeping their cars longer instead of trading up every three or four years. The price of vehicles is already ridiculous.

A little time and training and these thousands coming across the border will do it for 1/5 the price.

The EVs are not particularly affordable, either, and replacing the batteries are obnoxiously expensive on top of not being able to do with an EV what you can do with a fossil fuel burner.

My $0.02
1. 30-40% raise in salary, that is over the life of the contract so, a 4 yr contract that equals 7.5-10% per yr. They don't get it all at one time. The contacts I looked at were from $17-35/hr
2. non-union plants mentioned, there is a reason their $$'s/hr. is competitive is because the unions have established that as the going wage rate for the industry, let Mercades lower the wage rate to $15hr and see how long people will work there. Kindda like government contracts have a similar wage scale.
3. not sure of the OT for the 32 hr work week but most places that went to 12hr shift depending on shift schedule get OT after 36hr, I will say getting paid for 40 and only working 32 is radically different.
4. while not a fan of the government bail out of the auto industry they are such a big piece of the economic pie in the US, shutting down would be catastrophic to the system
5. never worked in an auto plant they probably are lot more automated but, in a papermill they are paying you the $$'s when the upset conditions happen, and the Co. isn't making money.
As a USW member, active on the local level but can't drink the kool-aide on the national level, still can't believe USW pushed fetterman/hillary in respective elections and the folks on the national level are feeling the pushback from the rank-and-file members.

30-30% pay raise over a 4 year schedule is still one helluva a pay raise AND a huge cost to the company. That trickles down to a substantial cost to the company and the me result is higher prices for an already overvalued product.
That does norm end well The company will further animate and reduce the labor force in the end.
Legacy Cost are the biggest factor to companies bottom lines. It all revolves around unionized workforces from the public and private sectors. It’s the biggest ticking time bomb unless and this is the deciding factor, federal gov bailouts.
This pattern is repeated over and over.
I like how folks hate government handout programs for the poor yet feel entitled to federal gov bailouts to keep their salaries rising and intact retirements
That’s pure BS in the end.
I’ll take it a step further.
Overvalued CEOs are a problem too. They should not have incentivized pillaging of their company. Kodak was a prime example of this. Other companies do as well. I kept up with Kodak because of the industry I was in as they were once the leader but no longer.

Hell, who gets a 30% raise without either advancing up the ladder or by having some sort of commission structure? Unions might be necessary in a few very niche career fields but what UAW is doing right now is negotiating their workers out of a job. While these plants are shut down, all the foreign auto makers here already are pumping out vehicles left and right. Wouldn’t shock me to hear that all of these plants start announcing moves to southern states in the coming years and telling the unions to piss up a rope.

You think just because they move to a southern state they won’t be unionized. We are a right to work state. Doesn’t mean they can’t unionize. Just means you don’t have to join the union if one is present. Mercedes workers benefit greatly from the UAW. It makes Mercedes pay better and it isn’t just cause they want to. If they don’t they will get unionized and they don’t want that. Same for Toyota and Honda and the others. Although everyone I talk to at Honda says it ain’t all that great. I dunno tho. I guess labor jobs should just all work for minimum wage and let management folks reap all the benefits. Maybe then everyone will be happy. Except for the laborers of course. But us laborers don’t really matter. We are just peons who don’t deserve to have anything in this world except what those college educated management folks want us to have.

I’m not against guys getting a pay raise but at some point if you feel your pay isn’t adequate for the labor you put forth then there are other jobs out there. There’s a crap ton of ways to learn other skills that can bring more money in. You can blame those folks in management that are supposedly keeping all that profit for themselves but you voluntarily work for them. I’m one of those college educated folks and haven’t had a pay raise in a while. If this persists I’ll weigh my options. That’s just the nature of the beast. I don’t need a Union or anyone else negotiating what I’m worth other than me. I highly doubt you’ll see any unionization here because most folks know that if it happens the foreign manufacturers will up and leave. Also, a competitive market benefits the worker whether you think it or not. The last thing the Japanese, Koreans, or Germans want is to have their factory shut down because their workers go find employment elsewhere. And there’s more competition moving in every year. The majority of unions have outlived their usefulness. How much of that pay increase are they taking from their members? How much of the Union bosses pay are they going to use to pay workers once the factories shutter?

Will agree 30% over 4 years is strong however, UAW is just trying to capitalize on the record profits that the big 3 are bragging about. Over the past few years profits from one of the 3 was approaching 60 billion( record profits) that is also strong. So, are the autos made in Mexico cheaper, I gonna say no, so the automakers just make more profits so, is it really a unionized workforce that is the reason for high price.

It doesn’t matter one lick what the company makes other than that means it’s able to make money for its shareholders and stay in business. 40% over 4 yrs is ridiculous. Pay for a job should be dependent on the education, skills and complexity of the job being performed. If nobody within a 100 mile area can do what you do, you can and should be paid a premium. If any monkey off the street can be trained to do your job, it is menial and shouldn’t pay much more than minimum wage. You can have someone trained to perform probably 75% of those union jobs in less than a month and that means the pay rate for that position dang sure shouldn’t be $25-$40/ hr. If these workers are so special and have such a great skill set, that it commands that kind of pay, it should be super easy to jump to another manufacturing facility in another industry at the top of the food chain and take someone else’s position and do a better job. Never happens. Why? Because most UAW workers are a coddled bunch of easily replaceable, worthless prima Dona’s that are used to working in a spotless environment, air conditioning and with 3 guys doing the work that 1 man should do. None of them wouldn’t survive a day in the field working in a mill, laying pipe or concrete, roofing, framing houses, a welding shop, a body shop or a mechanics shop. They are already overpaid for the value of job they perform. Those are just the facts.
