UAW wanted 40% and auto makers offered 20% increase in pay. Now rumors suggest UAW would consider 30% and that might be what auto makers end up accepting to end strike. We shall see...

The two sides seem miles apart.
I think the 32HR work week is the bigger hold up that the pay raise percentage

I don’t understand a 32 hr work week either. I work over 40 so I can make overtime.

I am not the smartest but I suspect everyone would like to cut their hours by 20% and increase their pay by 40%. I believe if I did my math correctly, they would be working less and making more.
Sounds like what every one that works for a living would like to have.

But if they can work 32 and get paid for 60...

I know several people would prefer to work 40 hours across four 10 hour days to have that third day off than to work five 8 hour days. After all working 8 hours a day pretty much eliminates doing much of anything else that day except for the things you would do every any way.

Even at 32 hrs and a 30% pay increase it still adds up to about the same $$ as working 40 hours or possibly a little bit more. Say they make $30 per hour at 40 hours they make $1200 now if they get 30% raise and a 32 hour week now they make $1248. Crazy

We are getting to be a lazier an lazier society. 32 hrs a week is a joke . Phuck em!!an the union . Most unions are democrats donors. .One day nobody will want to work . I been working 5 or 6 days a week . 10 hr days for 38 years . I love my job . I work on productivity. More I work more I make . But time coming soon I will retire an give lot of it up if I can force myself too. I remember years ago there was a ford plant in muscle shoals . Employees was told take a $1 hr cut or they close doors . Nope wouldn’t take it . Closed the doors . That what needs happen . Cushy jobs with tons benefits an still not happy. I keep driving my yotas.

My understanding is that part of the deal is that they only want to work 32 hours, but they want to be paid for 40 hours...in addition to the pay increase.

I should have gone into robotics, UAW will be replaced soon.
Amazon already has 100,000 sq ft distribution centers with less than 50 humans working in them. Most of those folks just keep the robots running.

They are going to end up working a 0 hour work week for 0 dollars. When the price of an American union vehicle rises above foreign competition (or same price but garbage quality), the company will either move the factory to a non-union state or overseas. Probably overseas if they are going to bother making the change. These people are idiots

It's time to let these gov't backed entities fail.

And it should be. You dont demand any kind of raise when you say "oh yeah, and I'm going to work less hours too". Frak them and the horse they rode in on. Perfect opportunity for the big 3 to bust the union once and for all. Bring in scabs and put all the protestors out of a job permanently. Everything has already been pretty much automated, with very few skilled craftsman required or left in any of the trades anymore, so replacement should be nothing more than a body swap, with very little production or productivity loss. Productivity will probably actually increase. Oh the stories I could tell about what I saw in the Cleveland, Romeo and Windsor engine plants back when I was in sr mgmt for a tier 1 supplier and in and out of there all the time. If we ran our company like those plants were run, we'd have been broke and out of business in a month. Now's the time, they want change, so give it to them.

The Japanese used to negotiate until demands got rediculous like this. They handled it by agreeing to the terms making the other side feel like they have accomplished something then about 90 days later they would close the facility and move the business elsewhere.

I am currently in contract negotiations with the USW and can tell you that they feel very empowered by what has been happening on the labor front here lately. They are taking the same path as the UAW.
