Much easier than trimming nails is to take them on a walk down the street. Asphalt/concrete will round them off nicely with minimal effort on your part.
While it is true that dogs that walk on those surfaces regularly do keep them trimmed down better, one needs to pay attention to the temperature of those surfaces so the pads of their feet don't burn.
