For those of you that planted the WMS Deer Magnet did you like it and at what rate did you plant it at? The WMS website states 50# acre but that seems mighty thin for my liking. I normally broadcast plant at a minimum of 100# per acre. I am considering doing 50# acre of WMS Deer Magnet along with some cereal rye and wheat. I like the benefits of the annual clover but by the time I add those separately into my cost/planning spreadsheet it runs up my cost another $200+. I have some white cloud crimson clover and fixation clover leftover from last year that I plan to add into this mix.

I’ve planted deer magnet before, but you have to add other seeds to fill the plot out. I think it gets the “one bag per acre” because of the clover seed in it. It definitely won’t work for the grazing pressure my fields get. I started doing my own “mix” to put more seed out at alittle cheaper cost. Ymmv

The website does say 50 lbs per acre but we plan to put down 100 lbs. I was puzzled that magnet is 50 lbs per acre and the Alabama Blend is 100 lbs per acre. This is our first year trying it so we will see.

Yall let us know how the WMS mixes turn out. I may try them next year.

Lot of folks use the magnet successfully

I planted other clovers w mine on acer field and use less than bag last year. I know guys that using for years amd lov it - it supposed to feed deer year around - one of the clubs i no that used it did the cage test and it was awesome - they also killed a 135 last year and this is well south tville - been using it for years

When i used the alabama blend i saw more deer than i ever seen. But the ala blend plays out after feb. I am trying something diff this year than magnet but think mGnet great choice. I trying miss blend and ala blend w crimson and aeroleaf this year

I really like it , but it's hard to get up here. I planted at #50 to acre and added bout 25 lbs Black Oats . Makes for a fine plot. I'm a BIG fan of Oats.

When i see those guys n the big club Squeaky i will ask how much per acre - they lov it. I think it best choice for deer managers but i going in diff direction for diff reasons

The one year we did it we added cereal rye and oats to it…the deer mowed it down. Big fan but curious as to how much you do per acre and the results. I plan on planting it next year when I get back to planting my own plots…best mix we have used

I normally do my own mix as well which consist of wheat, cereal rye, buck forage oats, black hawk arrow leaf and fixation clover. When I put the amount of seed needed and the cost of the seed into my spreadsheet it does not save me money. The cost is $271 more than going with 50# per acre of WMS Deer Magnet, 50# cereal rye and 30# wheat blend. I would plant that mix at 130# acre and save $271 dollars. The one thing about the spreadsheet I use is that you know what your cost will be and how much seed and fertilizer to buy for amount of acres that will be planted. It eliminates all the surprises and poor planning.

The WMS deer magnet has the black oats and triticale as the back bone of the mix. It looks like you added 25# more black oats to your mix. I am a big fan of oats as well but mostly use the buck forage oats.

I'm part of a larger club and we made the decision this year to plant deer magnet at 50lbs per acre rather than plant a 3 way mix at 100 lbs per acre. Costs are almost the same. Well see what the results are. Hoping the clover fills in a takes over for the lack of cereal grains. I would rather have clover any how.

Exactly what clovers are in the magnet mix?

I did Deer Magnet last year and went closer to 100lb per acre and it did great. I added some more clover on top of it. I would say your plan on the adding wheat and cereal rye would do great. I may try the Alabama blend this year, it calls for 100lbs per acre, that or just do the triticoat and add some clovers.

Squeaky you posted a seed tag of this blend back in 2018. Have the ingredients changed? If not your only getting about 36lbs of seed. You have to subtract the 5.03% inert matter, the 4.03% coating material,.50% of weed and other crop seed, and then it has only an 80% germination rate. So in reality you would need 1.5 bags to plant an acre. That's why when you use their recommendations, it looks thin because it is thin.

You have to go with what you’re seeing. For me, I got more tonnage for less or about the same amount I was paying for the deer magnet. I do like the grow coat that they put on their seeds. It seems to really give them a jump.

Here is what their website list as being in the deer magnet. I’ll need to look back for that post I made with the tag. I want to say we might have planted it that year on our KY lease. It’s definitely a product I haven’t used much due to mixing my own. The only reason I’m even considering it is be because the cost savings. I’ll need to go back an add an additional 25# of seed into my spreadsheet and see what that does to cost. I bet it will put me at same cost of making my own. I always figure my clover seed rate at PLS. If they recommend 5# acre that usually means 10# to get 5# pls.

The addition of 25# more of the Magnet flipped my cost by $50 which isn't much, but still more expensive.

Planted WMS Bama Blend 2 weeks ago and its already up and green.

Squeaky - got up with club that using magnet for many years - they are extremely detailed - they called the guys that make the seed years ago - guy said plant as described on bag - much research completed

So they been planting as bag says for years w great success. I inquired about cages - they said they put up cages for years w the magnet. They said they finally proved it to them selves that the deer just hammer down their plots that much amd they stopped putting up cages a few years back - proved it

They said guy encouraged not to over seed - when i plant my fields - i prob over seed

This same club get tremendous deer pics every year - especially for the area

2 Dogs, Guntersville feed and seed keeps a good bit of it.
