Son just turned three and wife and i are buying our kids a .22lr for first birthday and a .410 for their third.
What’s the best .410 for a youth? Don’t plan on him shooting it for another few years, but want something light with little recoil for when the time does come.
Was looking at semi-auto mossberg.

The BEST youth 410 is probably a 28ga….sets them up for far more success than any 410. JMO I’ve only ever shot one 28 gauge in my life (with TSS). It kicked worse than a 20 gauge, but it may have had a lot to do with the particular gun.

They are going to have to grow into it right?... I mean they don't necessarily make toddler specific firearms or at least we're not going to have much of a selection.
I agree with Modux on the 28. I wouldn't spend any kind of serious money on a .410 anything. BUT... IMO the single shot .410 IS the starting point. You'll want one of those if you really want to get the kids shooting early.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

There are three I would consider: a rossi, a cva scout and a stevens. Personally, I'm in the same boat as you, youngster and getting them set up and what to buy. I've settled on a 28 gauge, because I want them to have a little more advantage. I'm currently looking at: a mossberg youth bantam, a tristar (will have to have the stock cut and shortened 14.5 lop is too much); and a Beretta. The Beretta is more than I want to spend, I've never spent that much on a gun, a scope but not a gun.
The Remington 1100 in 28 is nice but heavy. The Benelli I'm worried about the inertia drive being too much at such a young age.

Get him something that is small and size appropriate that he can hold/swing and shoot easily.
Kids beat the crap out of everything, so Make sure it can take a beating also and dings are no problem.
Then get them a nice one when they are big enough to appreciate it and tote their own gun
I went with the Rossi trifecta.410/22/.243 to start him off

The BEST youth 410 is probably a 28ga….sets them up for far more success than any 410. JMO I’ve only ever shot one 28 gauge in my life (with TSS). It kicked worse than a 20 gauge, but it may have had a lot to do with the particular gun. this almost certainly had to do with the huge payload in most 28 gauge TSS shells. there all shooting over 1oz and some as much a 1 3/8 ounce. that quite a more than most 12 gauge target loads. It doesnt matter what gauge the shotgun is, if you shoot a12 guage payload at standard speeds its going to feel like a 12 gauge. the 28 gauge is "ideal" with a 3/4 ounce "square" load. just like 7/8oz in a 20, 1oz in a 16, and 1 1/8oz in a 12.

Yeah, gonna be more of a commemorative thing sitting in the safe til he’s old enough to actually use it. I dont mind dropping around 5-700$ on it, just don’t want to go crazy on a no-name junk one. Plan is something that would last, and he’d want to keep onto down the road. Seen some used 1100’s pop up lately that I might have to look closer at.

find you a older savage . stay away from the single shots that dont have the grove just in front of the hammer for sight aliment .

the problem with autos and pumps for starter guns were length , made then end heavy . i started kids out on a 410 then 16ga single shot from there ,,,, what ever

Check out a Tristar Viper G2. My buddy’s son has shot one for the past couple of years. I bought one for my son last year and we used it in 3 separate shoots, probably 5-6 boxes, without any issues. Tristar Viper G2

Well, ended up with a 20ga. It weighed the same as the 410 I was looking at and couldn’t find a 28ga under 1500$. Recoil’s gonna be a bit more but it’s not like he’ll be shooting for the next 5 or 6 years anyways. Atleast he’ll have a gun he’ll hopefully enjoy shooting as an adult one day as well.
