Ordered my first flyrod. Going to try and catch some trout below smith dam. Hoping to try out in Ga, Tn after I figure out some things. Mainly how to keep the fly in the water and not in the trees, or around my neck.😂 Where are yall buying your gear? Ideas for starting flies? Sizes? Seems like alot are saying 16-24? Any advice on any of it appreciated. So far only watching YouTube instructionals. Looks like a fun endeavor. Bought a 9' 5wt.

I have been wanting to try below smith as well. I have never caught a fresh water trout. I believe the 9’ 5 wt is perfect for what you are wanting to do. I have never been there so take everything With a Grain of Salt but there’s a fly shop on 69 and I think they sell guided trips as well. I was planning on doing my shopping there and get as much info on how to catch trout as I could if and or when I go up there.

Forget the flies for a day or two and for a piece of yarn on and practice casting. Then practice more. Roll casts too. Wooly buggers will catch anything. San Juan worms, hopper patterns, and elk caddis all catch them at sipsey.

Trout suck. Bass and bream will be your friend....

Trout suck. Bass and bream will be your friend.... This is correct. haha On a serious note though, be careful below the dam. When they sound that horn it's time to scamper up the bank bc there's a shucks ton of water headed your way, and quick.
