If you have 22 shorts, get something that shoot shorts, longs and LR (though, I could't tell you the last time I saw 22 shorts on the shelf). Henry lever actions or Rem 552 speedmaster would be my choices. If you want just LR, ruger 10-22

A marlin golden 39A is my all time favorite, but you probably won’t find one. Ruger 10-22 is hard to beat.

22shorts have been avail on ammoseek since I’ve been checking but they’re using twice expensive.

Mighty fine rifles. Always been a fan of those. Ithaca M49 is another classic I’ve always liked

I have a Speedmaster and it's a Great rifle. Dont see em around as much anymore

10/22 will do everything you need.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Thwe CZ 457 American combo would be a great gun that he can grow into and will sever him well into his adult years. They come with a 22lr barrel and a 17hrm. You can aslo get 22mag barrel for it. They shoot great with the ammo it likes and fairly good with most i've tried in it. Note would have to be scoped.

Mine is definitely bigger..... It's got Anschutz written on the side of it.

I'm going to suggest you get a 10/22 because that is what you really need if you just want something to plink with. It's pretty much the gold standard for what you are wanting.

The Tikka doesn't shoot well enough for the price IMO. Neither does the most expensive Ruger. It just costs more I had one and sold it I was not impressed. I know I joke a lot about Tikka but serious comment this time. I'd pass on that - no reason to spend the extra coin the truth is some of the cheap guns will shoot very well so you really wind up paying more for a .22 for the consistency in accuracy from a factory rifle. Talking about from rifle to rifle. This is not really a TIkka discussion or specific comment coming from me... it's all of them. The mid-priced factory .22 rifles on the market.... pass on all of those. They are not quite good enough for competition while ultimately just being more expensive for a squirrel rifle. There are a couple chassis rifles that are mid-priced that are pretty close but I would not want one of those for general use.

The better mid-range .22s on the market come from a manufacturer most shooters have never paid attention to or really have never heard of.... there is a .22 specific market out there.

I am a huge .22 guy I love squirrel hunting. I do most of my hunting with a 39A.
