So tell me how to have a shoot or two. I have about 2 acres in sunflowers and another 6 in a mix that includes sorghum and sunflowers.A strip of the Sunflowers did not make well along the north edge and there is probably 1-2 acres in the south end f the field the deer decimated everything but sorghum and a chit ton of coffee weed that needs to go before making viable seed. I figured I would spray/mow the weak areas and start feeding them. Then at some point till and top seed and start cutting strips of sunflowers. What would my timing need to be? I am in south zone. I

If it were me I’d start the first of august cutting strips in the field. Then the next week run your disc over the cut strips to bare dirt, then cut you another set of strips beside the previous. Over lap that bare dirt so your bushhog throws some seed on top of the dirt. Top sow wheat on the bare dirt. Continue cycle till the day before your shoot. Legal and provides the most seed to ground. I like to leave patches 10’x10’ for hunters to hide in.

They eat it but I was told by someone that it’s actually bad for them to eat. Put some on a gravel driveway one time to “kill the weeds” but didn’t notice more dove than before hand

Rock Salt! Ok, I’ll bite. What’s the deal with rock salt? Dove like it or something? Long ago....50 plus years ago folks would put out rock salt in areas within a mile or less of a known watering source. Then sit around it later in the evening and shoot them coming to water in more need than normal

Best dove shoot i ever been on we found out the next weekend the clearcut was covered in Rock Salt. While waiting on noon, a Game Warden pulled up and let us know we should probably leave. We did.

Is it legal to bushog and spread wheat leading up until the time to disc and top sow?
Had a visitor on opening day last year and would like to do it correctly this time

You can top so on freshly broken ground at a rate of 200 lbs per acre.( at least that is what it was when I lived in Alabama a few years ago. Can’t go over what has already been broken up and can freshen up what has already been sown. I worked from the outside in when I did mine. Divide the field in quarters and do 1/4 each week up to the opener. The week of the shoot you should have fresh dirt and seed in the middle of the field. Best opportunity for everyone to have a crack at birds

Burn it after you cut it. Trust me. Talk about loving bare ground. I do this then run a drag over it a week before season so Im not covered in ash day of the hunt. After I drag it I top sow wheat. Hunt it the 1st week a couple times then cut it for hay next spring. Rinse and repeat
