Seems like there's a lot of love for Toyota on here and for good reason they have a reputation for building quality vehicles. I mean who doesn't love a Tacoma? Toyota has been under lots of criticism from the leftists as of late for not jumping on the EV bandwagon soon enough. Well it looks like Toyota has been spending their time hashing out the latest in battery technology and now they are saying that they have developed a solid state battery that: 1. Weighs half as much as the current crop of EV batteries. 2. Has a range of 745 miles. 3. Charges in 10 minutes. If all of that is true, that is going to be a game changer in the EV business. I thought Toyota was slow to jump into EV world because they were going strong on hydrogen vehicles? They do have the Mirai BUT it’s expensive to fuel. Since Covid it’s doubled in price to fill. I think it’s about $100 per fill up. I’m not sure how far it goes on fill up tho. If the EV Toyota builds can do 750 miles then I would consider buying one.

You’re still going to run into the problem of not having charging stations readily available on your travels. Sure 750 miles is fine if your going home everyday but go on a week long trip, even just to the beach that’s relatively close, and by the time you’ve ran around for a week, you don’t have enough juice to get home.

Hey, if their stuff turns out to do what they say it can do, that’s a step in the right direction. If the battery tech really does look like it can get a 10min or less recharge, as well as cost comparatively close to a new motor, that will be the game changer. Fossil fuels are still hands down the most efficient means of transportation and to overtake it, you have to be able to recharge as fast as you can put gas in your car (or at least close to that time frame). Also if this is true the US needs to start building nuke plants immediately. There is no other way to meet the grid needs that will arise from the EV technology if it begins to replace fossil fuels.

Charging networks are growing quite quickly. I’m certain when automobiles were in early’ish adoption 100 years ago folks were saying the same things about gas stations. “Everyone has hay, there isn’t enough gas stations, horseless carriages will never catch on!”

I am not a fan yet. I get about a year and a half out of a cell phone before I notice the battery starts to work less and less well. I like the new Tacoma, but I wouldn't want one with the battery, even though I like the extra torque it adds. And it needs to get better than 21 or 22 mpg.
The new canyon/colorado with a 2.7 liter turbo 4 isn't doing any better. Why get a midsize truck when it doesn't really do better than a full size in terms of MPG?

Overall Toyota can't be beat for a daily all around driving machine....now if u need power or if your to big that's a different story...I'd still wait a couple years and let the kinks get worked out tho

Why get a midsize truck when it doesn't really do better than a full size in terms of MPG? For me: Mid-sz Cheaper Easier to fit parking spots Easier to maneuver off road, especially some of the mountain/trail roads Cheaper Full sz More $ More room Bigger bed Heavier loads

I think the play would be for my wife as an example. She has a 60 mile round trip commute to work Mon-Fri.
No oil changes, transmission, lifters, etc
I’m not an electric car fan and have no desire to purchase one; however, I think it’ll come to a point where it may make sense for specific situations.

Assume ~4miles per kWh
You need to double the electrical output, infrastructure, etc.
