I was a high school coach and worked with many coaches in various sports over a span of nearly 30 years. I hate to make this statement, but in my opinion, there are not a whole lot of completely competent coaches at the HS level. Don’t get me wrong, I have worked with some great ones but they don’t come along very often. Many of these individuals are really good people. They are simply not qualified and experienced enough in the sport they are coaching. A good coach needs to have played the sport he/she coaches, (I know there are exceptions ), to get a better feel of the game. He needs to be a good motivator, knows how to deal with parents, needs to practice and prep for games properly, and needs to be able to deal with a vast variety of personalities. A degree in the scientific principles of coaching and administration and supervision of athletic sports is helpful as well. I agree peach. But there are definitely exceptions to that rule about having played the sport you are coaching as you said. I coached with 2 HOF high school coaches, and they could win at anything. Some guys kids just love to play for and they can squeeze every last drop of talent out of a player. These guys could have coached the middle school girls swim team having never learned to swim, and won. Then I also coached with a guy who knew a crap ton about X’s and O’s But couldn’t coach to save his life.
