Youngest son is graduating high school and wants to go into the Air Force. Supposed to talk with a recruiter next week. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm sure that a lot of things have changed since I was in the USAF (85-95).
I'm assuming he wants to do active duty? It appears based on what I have been reading that all branches of the military are falling short of their recruiting goals - so, he should be in a good position to be more selective on the job he will get.
Many people that I have talked with in the past didn't trust the recruiters; however, I would suggest they are there to guide the recruit to a job that is suitable for knowledge and/or skill level. I can't think of a single job in the USAF that is not transferable to the private sector. If there was one piece of advice that I SHOULD HAVE listed to while in the USAF (vs. waiting till I got out) would have been to pursue the higher educational opportunities available while enlisted.

I retired from the USAF in 2006, but I don't know what current conditions are. I recommend knowing what career field your son is interested in and go for that. Don't let them sway you from it with a flashy video to get him to sign-up for hard-to-fill positions. There's a reason they are hard to fill. I wanted to work on aircraft and I stuck with it. No regrets.

I work with a bunch of retired Air Force guys. All good folks that loved their time in. We're all Fuel guys, so if your Son needs any advice from me, the Fuel side is a great way to go. Plenty of job opportunities when he gets out.
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

My Son entered at age 22 with 2 years of Junior College under his belt. He will be 37 in August. He completed his education while in. Ended up going to Officers Training School in Montgomery after a few years in...(Which He strongly recommends as it puts you in a higher Bracket). He's a Drone Pilot. Has been stationed in Las Vegas,NV. and Alamogordo, NM. They are moving next month to Sumpter, S.C. which will put them only 5.5 hours away!! Now We can catch up on time together!!

My son did 20 years USAF in aircraft maintenance. During the whole last 20 years of US involvement in bad places he spent four years in South Carolina, four years in Italy, four years in Hawaii, three years in new Mexico, then had several short tours to Germany and the Middle East. Outstanding career. Active duty USAF or the Air national Guard would be the only branch of the military I'd recommend.

Is your son qualified per his grades and or azfab??? test scores to go to their OCS....officer candidate school? what they called it in the 80's...lol Definitely, I would recommend getting his wings if at all possible....I think the govt benefits and holidays and pension plan would appeal to any young person today....I wish him well if he gets in....What was his reasoning for wanting to join the AF...?

I got a couple 3 buddies that did 3yrs in and then 20 more in the guard afterwards and they all make out like bandits with the all benefits they get, got one that even sent his step-kids to college by transferring his part of his GI Bill package....  He could always do 3 or 4 in and bail out....I got 1 buddy that went to WestPoint and graduated with honors in engineering, afterwards he went to jump school I believe it was in Ft Hood Texas maybe? Had him a motorcycle for transportation while he was doing all that....  ....He up and quit (Shocked me I thought he would do 20yrs at least cause he was already a Capt, and due up for Major and making bank) and went to work for Clairol hair products... He's retired now from Clairol and lives in grand Rapids Mi...

1. Space Force, Air Force, Coast Guard. In that order.
2. The young person needs to have a REALLY GOOD IDEA of what they would like to do for a career either in the military or in civilian life before they sign any papers.

My Niece and Nephew came out purty damn good in the long run on that deal after being Threatened. Shame we lost a lot of good Airmen & Soldiers because of that BS.....

I think it depends on your job. Our CG aviation guys work every component on the aircraft with inly 2 ratings. AF guys are typically stuck working specific components. I know nothing about space force. AF definitely has the upper hand with of duty things to do

I think it depends on your job. Our CG aviation guys work every component on the aircraft with inly 2 ratings. AF guys are typically stuck working specific components. I know nothing about space force. AF definitely has the upper hand with of duty things to do I worked aircraft hydraulics and we were considered specialists. But in the 90's when manning levels dropped, and the job had to get done, maintenance folks became more consolidated into Manx Units. If the hydraulics were good, you would then help other specialists or crew chiefs. Then you would get cross-utilization training (CUT) with many other tasks. You can learn ALOT and it will only make you better. That wide band of knowledge will make you some $$$ when you get out.

Highly recommend it. 87-90 963rd AWACS @ Tinker AFB in OKC. Got to see some places I’d have never visited otherwise, watched the SR-71 take off at Mildenhall in England and OKC, passed aircrew survival training and crossed over the North Pole. Met some damn good people.

A lot of them are at Army bases now doing the same job as civilians. I have a lot of ex AF buddies, for me the AF and the CG are my top two choices.
