Just curious about everyones opinion is on high fence hunting. I have a very negative outlook on it. Maybe my views are not necassarily that of the high fence itself but the genetic tampering that is out there. I may be invited to go to a lodge that is fenced soon and am probably going to decline the offer because I do not agree with it. I think it is a joke to kill monster deer under these circumstances and call yourself a hunter. What are the pros to it?

If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.

One of my customers has one, abt 400 acres, he uses it as a place to take clients/vendors and most of the costs are tax deductible.....his words not mine, the kill some good ones, great genetics in the area and is very impressive to see what age will do alone. He says he goes more often and sees nothing than see anything
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers.......... Si Robertson

There are many ways to think about it. One way is spending ten times the ammount your neighbor does on planting the biggest and baddest food plots and keeping the deer on your property vs your bordering neighbor or you can just put a fence up.. They deer still have to get up and move around during the day even if they are in a fence. I think if the fenced area is 30 acres and they put one deer in there for a client then it is a turkey shoot, but any large fenced areas are ok to hunt in.. Now keep in mind, that the term "large" is relative.. haha.. Everyone has their own opinions, but I dont think there is anything wrong with it as long as the fenced area is big enough (again, a relative term)

No one gets upset when a farmer goes out and kills a cow to get a steak, but high fence for deer causes controversy. Just cause they get dressed up in camo like us doesn't mean they're actually hunting.

I think it's wrong. Game in Alabama is property of the State. When a landowner does something on his property that affects my property, I'm against that. Say you have 100 acres boarded on 3 sides by a big money man with 1000 acres and he fences his property. You now have zero hunting.

I have no problem with it. If I go buy 500-1000 acres and spend thousands of dollars to do things the way I want (the right way) and have some blow hard who sits on my property line (he has the right to do) and shoots the 2 year old deer I am letting walk, I'm going to be PISSED!!! Insert fence here and that stops and I am no longer wasting my HARD EARNED money. If you want the "states" deer then have the state come in and get them and I'll buy more and breed my own herd...
The problem comes in when people take advantage of folks with money. Sitting on their property lines and killing sub-adult bucks that someone has spent a lot of time and money on growing (again, their right). The fence just controls their finances plain and simple. I would do it too if I could afford it.

He might be a good person to talk to about your concerns. Here's a link to some information about him and his hunting outfit to read before you contact him: Dream Ranch in AlabamaThe tornadoes last year took a toll on his property: We lost a lot of trees26 percent to be exact, Austin adds. We had two miles of fence down that had to be replaced. Trees had to be cleaned up on quail courses and deer food plots. Let him explain it to you from experience. Most of us on aldeer don't have that kind of experience. I bet he don't mind dog hunters or having what qdm'ers call "brown-it's-down" hunters for neighbors.

Some friends of mine hunt in Illinois (fair chase, no fences) on a peice of property owned by a wealthy landowner. One of his side businesses is raising deer. Last year they were up there and looked at some of the bucks he had. 190' three year olds. Genetically tampered of course. He told them the market for buying those deer was bad and that they could buy one for $4000. For $4000 you could buy it, kill it, and come up with a belivable story. Really? The only reason he is even in business is because there are people that buy them. I've also seen pics and read of earth traps entended for luring game into a high fence by placing feeders next to the fence and building a ramp to the top of the fence. Game jump in to get the corn and cannot get back out. I do believe 1000 acres fenced in levels the playing feild as long as ethics are followed.

See, you're taking both sides of it. You're acting like they are your deer, and they aren't. The man shooting the 2 year old deer, as long as he's doing it legally, should not be at fault. You're trying to tell him what to do on his property, yet you don't want anyone telling you what not to do with yours....

Sounds like one of the members whose posts I'm ignoring thinks the state owns the deer again.
Let's look at that screwed up theory by looking at the whole picture:

The Holy Bible Genesis 9 New King James Version (NKJV) Gods Promise to Noah 1 So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs. 4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
... 8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: 9 And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 And God said: This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 And God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.

I've been taken to two different places that had a high fence, but I hunted the free range part of their property, by choice. Before you decline the offer make sure there isn't free range hunting available.

I've had the opportunity to hunt a 1200 acre high fence that was privately owned. the deer are just as wild in the fence as they are on the outside. the only difference I see is that you can control the population better and have a stricter harvest plan .

If you own a larger tract of land and you have the resources to build/maintain the fenced area and take care of the deer I have no problem with it. I do have a problem with do-gooders and government type controls on private property.
