It’s been almost 3yrs to the day since I killed a bird. 2021 was almost a total loss due to missing the season with a broken arm. Last season I got close a couple of times but couldn’t seal the deal….same with this season up until today. Didn’t get to hunt yesterday morning…MrsGomer sideswiped a curb Friday night and blew out a tire in the middle of a torrential downpour and we had to leave it in a nearby parking lot. I’d planned on a quick hunt yesterday morning before having to be at the ballpark at 930 but instead I was up at 730 going and working on her car. I was pissed off and wasn’t planning on hunting today before church but woke up about 4 this morning and couldn’t go back to sleep so I figured what the heck, I’ll go. Got to my listening spot and heard him gobble about 545 maybe 500yds off. Closed the distance and got to within maybe 150yds. He gobbled several more times and I was able to cut it down to about 100 and setup. About 6, I clucked at him a few times and he cut me off gobbling. Clucked back a couple more times and he cut me off again so from that point on I quit calling to him and setup facing his direction. He gobbled a few more times on his own but I never answered. At 615 a hen flew down about 50yds to my left but went way behind me. At 620 I heard him fly down, still 75-100yds out in front of me. I scratched in the leaves and clucked a couple times and he gobbled. Clicked off the safety and went silent. About 10 min later I heard him walking and see his white head step out into a trail. Congrats on not only killing him, but killing him like a Pro with limited calling. A lot of folks would have sent him the other way with loud cackling and cutting because they saw it on TV.
