He really wanted to get back "home" to Alabama . It took him about four months to make it to South America but only one to get back to Fur's sanctuary in Alabama. This is all very interesting . They aren't in a hurry to head south since they don't have an actual home to go to in south America. They just sleep in trees down there. When they're coming back here, they've got to compete for a nesting spot. Has anyone seen a pair nest in anything other than a man made structure? Do they use tree hollows or ??? There are very, very few documented cases of them living in natural cavities in the east. There's an occasional report of them nesting in a street light in various places. There's a different subspecies of Martin that lives on the west coast that still use quite a few natural cavities. They nest in the Saguaro cactuses in the desert regions of the SW, all the way up the west coast into Canada.

That last map looks almost identical to the first map you posted! Maybe they flew down and back in the same grouping?

My martins are all usually gone by the first week in July.

That last map looks almost identical to the first map you posted! Maybe they flew down and back in the same grouping? It is the same map. It just has the dates on it where it spent time along the path and how long it was there. Wasn’t the fact that he left in June unusual? I thought that they would hand around until much later than that before the pushed South. No, my earliest to nest birds start leaving in late June. Most if not all are done by early July. Some of that is due to the size of my colony. It’s one of the largest in the area. They come back earlier and nest earlier than a small colony does. If hawk pressure isn’t too bad, the parents only hang out with the nestlings at the colony site for a week or so after the nestlings fledge. Then they head to a pew-migratory roost.

I don't know if martins do something similar, but some Discovery channel or similar type show on birds migrating across large spans of ocean like that said they will get in the wind patterns and just drift and will actually go to sleep for a time. I bet the martins make that gulf crossing quicker than you think, that will be interesting to see on the timeline as well and the whole trip probably is much quicker than we can imagine also. Believe that was a Swift. Said they can cover 1000km a day and stay air born for months.

Hung 8 gourds had 2 with nest but several more birds hanging around. I think some of my gourds were to small? My last pair is close to leaving the nest. The babies are hanging way out for feeding times they look big.

Left US coast on July 10 and arrived entered Brazil on July 27. 17 day trip back home.
Left Brazil Feb 1 and returned to US home on Feb 26. 25 day trip to US home.
They didn't waste much time along the way! I always assumed they took their time and spent several days at locations along the way on both trips.

After reading this post when it first started I bought a pole/gourd system recommended by Fur. Got it up late but ended up with two nests and sometimes a dozen or more just hanging around.Very cool birds, I hope all the gourds are filled next year.
