I travel a lot and stumbled on the “Secrets True Crime” podcast that seems to be centered on Walker County. The first several episodes were focused on the murder of Eric Cates and the last few have been the disappearance of Jessica Hamby. One thing is clear to me, y’all have a shucks load of dope heads up there and it’s a couple generations deep. Granted, the host of the podcast is a bleeding heart liberal who doesn’t fault the victims at all for their shifty choices in life but it’s still interesting. Anybody familiar with these cases?

Haven’t heard the podcast, but have heard an ol boy say, with conviction, “They’ll kill ya and bury ya in a strip mine in Walker County Alabama!!!”

Very familiar. I delivered mail in the area where hamby came up missing from. Know about 90% of the folks that are mentioned in the pod cast. I found the body of one of the girls mentioned in the pod cast a few years ago.

Used to be a lot of tough individuals from up that way but now I am seeing a lot of the kids turning out flaming gay and goth /emo type from up there. Not sure what is going but my wife swears it must be in the water.

I used to hunt with 3 brothers that were born and raised there. I have heard some stories about one of the women that disappeared. This was probably 15 years ago. More than once I heard them say, you can still get someone killed for 50 dollars there. These old boys were some of the best people I have ever known.

The folks running Walker Co are more crooked than the dope heads. Rumor has it they know who killed Eric but nobody is willing to go after the people behind it because of what will happen.

The Jessica Hamby case is a Marion County case. She was last seen at the home of one of my clients. The local rumor here is that she overdosed and died and the other folks with her got scared and disposed of the body.

I think it really got started in the late 90’s early 2000’s when the opioid epidemic was just getting going. There was “pain clinics” about every 1/4 mile, then once you head out of jasper it was bingo halls. Those folks needed money and I didn’t matter how they got it. Number one place to hire a hitman is what I’ve always been told. I do know it was the epicenter for opioid addiction outside of coal mining towns in West Virginia.

Based solely on this podcast I’d say you are probably right. At the very least they are extremely incompetent if this podcast is accurate. I do think that young Sheriff they elected had good intentions.

That's ironic. I watched a Phil Donahue in 1985 (senior at Bama) where he interviewed a hitman. Those that watched this show might remember how he rapid fired questions as credits were rolling at the end. The questions and answers that I remember were:

If you want to pay for a hit on someone, where do you go? After a few vague answers, and Donahue staying on him, he finally said Franklin county, Alabama. (The Dawson family immediately came to mind.) How much would it cost? You can put a hit on somebody for $100.

Im from Bibb County and we got our share of dopers but Walker has us beat. Rode through Jasper on a Friday around lunch about 6 months ago and I was shocked at how many geekers were out and about sitting here or there.
